Marconi to drop out of governor's race (CT)

Mired in the second tier of Democratic gubernatorial hopefuls with low name recognition and little money, Ridgefield First Selectman Rudy Marconi is expected Thursday morning to drop out of the race.

His departure, the third from the once-crowded slate of Democrats in the last week, leaves the May 22 convention open for Greenwich millionaire Ned Lamont and former Stamford mayor Dannel Malloy to battle for the more than 1,800 delegates.

With only two candidates vying for delegates, there's little doubt the party is heading for an August primary in its attempt to return a Democrat to the governor's office for the first time since early 1991.

A source familiar with Marconi's campaign said the veteran first selectman will drop out during a 10:30 a.m. Thursday news conference at the Ridgefield Community Center.
