As one who lived in and loves New Orleans, I know that New Orleanians would be amused by the sarcasm. After all, the seafood industry in Louisiana and the Gulf Coast is utterly fucked for at least 10 years because of this tragedy.

All you can do is laugh at how completely fucked over the Gulf Coast and beyond is. It's actually incomprehensible.

15. Actually, as someone living in NOLA, I don't find this amusing.

It has been almost 5 years since Katrina and the city still is plagued with problems. We were finally seeing our tourism numbers rise after the Saints win. Though summer is not a huge tourism time for us in the city, it is for the fishing sites in the lower parishes. It is about the only time they make money which keeps them afloat for the rest of the year. Katrina, Ida, and Gustav did a real number on those border (to the Gulf) parishes.

I know you didn't create this out of malice, but it isn't amusing, at least not to me and I live outside the French Quarter and many people are very, very worried.

I have always wanted to visit there and was going to plan trip for my anniversary end of Oct when spill happened. Last week I went and bought the plane fare anyway. The area needs us to support them and I don't have to order fish...I think my husband and I will enjoy the jazz and pubs.

A word of advice: if you are coming toward the end of October, that is Halloween which is a HUGE holiday here, so much so, it is celebrated the weekend prior (gay Halloween) and the weekend of the actual date. I would suggest looking for rooms now and lock in a lower rate because it will go up! There are some really great places here to explore. If you need any suggestions, let me know!

I am indeed worried about what could happen to not only the city, but the region in general. I'm coming back in last summer and have been coming back several times. I'll be doing some volunteer work through Hands On New Orleans while there. I'll also be stopping by to see Garland Robinette at WWL since we worked together a while back.

Sometimes you have to laugh at the problem because it hurts so much.

My sweetheart Jeanne and I were down in New Orleans in 2004. This was before Katrina, Jeanne was still alive and I still had a job that let me travel. A high point of the trip was a swamp tour through the bayous.

Jeanne tried to book a tour guided by a biologist; he was unavailable so we took a tour guided by a young Cajun: Capitaine Louis. Actually Louis had a considerable knowledge of the swamp's ecosystem, plus we got a brief look at the Cajun culture of the bayous. Louis guided tours during the tourist season, and he had his own shrimping boat. He also hunted and fished in the bayou. He pointed out the sections of the bayou that belong to his family; they've lived there for centuries, taking pride in their heritage and their way of life.

I wonder how this young man and his family will fare after this disaster! The poisoning of the water will probably reach into the bayou region. :cry:
