38. Fairly short, direct, to the point
Plenty of blame to go around, stop finger-pointing, try and fix the system that allowed the mess.

Hopefully all the words go into real action and congress gets the bill through to help the gulf region.

40. It can't
Even if things change in the short term, cost will become the overriding factor before long, and even a short track record without additional spills will be soon as a good excuse for relaxing the standards again.

42. Partial transcript...
After meeting with Cabinet members to discuss the BP oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico, President Obama says he wants to "underscore the seriousness and urgency" of the situation. He cites the "potential devastation to the Gulf Coast, its economy and its people" and says "relentless efforts" must continue to "stop the leak and contain the damage."

"There's already been a loss of life, and damage to our coast line," he says, in addition to the livelihoods of people who live there. "I saw firsthand the anger and furstration felt by our neighbors in the Gulf
shore as president."

He continues, with Secretaries Salazar, Chu and Napolitano next to him: "I'm not going to rest or be satisfied until the leak is stopped at the source," he says, "and the people of the Gulf are able to go back to their lives and their livelihoods." (12:17 p.m.)

Noting uncertainty in the amount of oil that has been leaked, Obama cites "varying reports" of how much is affecting the area. "There's oil leaking, we need to stop it, and we need to stop it as soon as possible," he says.

Turning his attention to BP and other companies involved, Obama says: "I know BP is committed to pay for the response effort. I have to say, though, I did not appreciate what I consider to be a ridiculous spectacle" during recent congressional hearings.

Executives at the hearings, he says, were "falling over each other to point the finger of blame at somebody else. The American people could not have been impressed with that display, and I certainly wasn’t."

"The system failed, and it failed badly," he continues. "For that, there's enough responsibility to go around, and all parties should be willing to accept it. That includes, by the way the federal government." He then lambasts the "cozy relationship" oil companies and government agencies have had. (12:21 p.m.)
