Talbot: Mystery $1 million flows into Alabama primary race
Something subversive is afoot in Alabama's Republican primary.

A shadowy outfit called the New Sons of Liberty Inc. is poised to launch a major, statewide advertising campaign in connection with the race. The group has committed more than $1 million toward the purchase television air time on networks in the state's five largest media markets, beginning May 21.

The group is a non-profit 501c4 organization, enabling it to spend unlimited sums on lobbying without disclosing its donors. Its origins remain unclear, but the group apparently is related to a grass roots organization called New Sons of Liberty Society.

The society, based in Downers Grove, Ill., is a so-called "birther" group formed to advocate for an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would require candidates for president to show a valid birth certificate.

3. Interesting that the birthers are trying this tack
All they have to do is get one state to go along with this. I noted that they failed in Arizona, perhaps they're still working their way through the alphabetical list.

Chances are, they'll get one state to do this before 2012, and then we'll see this thing taken to the SCOTUS.
