Salazar, Napolitano tell BP to pay up
By Eric Zimmermann - 05/15/10 02:51 PM ET

British Petroleum should make clear that they will pay the entire cost of the Gulf Coast oil spill, Secretaries Ken Salazar and Janet Napolitano said today.

In a letter to the BP CEO Tony Hayward, the Interior and Homeland Security secretaries demanded that BP not rely on a law limiting oil spill liability at $75 million.

"The public has a right to a clear understanding of BP's commitment to redress all of the damage that has occurred or that will occur in the future as a result of the oil spill," Salazar and Napolitano wrote.

Legislation is pending in Congress to raise the liability cap to as high as $17 billion. That legislation was blocked in the Senate by Sen. Lisa Murkowski (R-Alaksa).

BP executives have previously said publicly that they would not point to the liability cap as an excuse for limiting clean-up payments.

BP Chairman and President Lamar McKay called the cap "irrelevant" in testimony before a Senate panel.

1. If they refuse to pay every single last penny of cleanup
and damage done to the ecosystem and economy, the US should seize all of their assets in US waters and land and kick them out.

4. They should do that anyway
Just like 234 years ago, they should give the British their walking papers, make it "US Petroleum", a nationalized company. That would let Exxon, Texaco, and Shell know what would be facing them if they fucked up in a similar manner.

2. What's going to come next? A sternly worded letter reminding them of the first letter?

3.  Good for them though I must say Janet will likely kick more butt than Salazar!
But lets hope this isn't just words. BP MUST pay for everything.ALL of it. And our experts as well. I really wonder if they will? I keep thinking about all those companies who pay fines rather than observe environmental policy and the big fear I have is that the perpetrators of this could potentially be hired by us and benefit from their negligence. I hope to god that isn't the case. We need to send a huge message on this huge. People need to go to jail and we have those who need to be fired.

7. Good. They should pay for it.
I just hope they don't get money slipped back to them under the table.
