I saw Michelle Obama at the GWU grad ceremony yesterday..

She is a fantastic speaker. Apparently there was "deal" with GWU if the students could put in 100,000 hours of community service during the past year she would speak at their graduation.. They cleared that number easily. She focused her comments on serving and giving and volunteering such as Peace Corps and other volunteer/community service type opportunities and stressed that it will help them individually as much or more than those they are helping. I was a Peace Corps Volunteer many years ago and I can say that is absolutely true.

BTW, my niece graduated with honors from GWU med school. Now she is off to residency and begin paying off her enormous student loan! But apparently there is provision in the healthcare bill to forgive their loan if a Doctor works for a non-profit hospital/clinic for 10 years... but they do have to pay on the loan during that time at 10% of their salary. She plans to do that. I think its a very good idea.

1. I love having Michelle Obama as our First Lady
I like her better than Jackie Kennedy who was too distant and unapproachable although she was very popular. Michelle is truly involved with the community. I don't mean to sound like I didn't like Jackie. She was very important for our national image at the time and she took on the mantle of First Lady with style and grace and she was beautiful and classy. I just like Michelle's ability to do that AND put her sneakers and gardener's gloves on and hoist a shovel like she knows which side is the business side. And then the hugs she gives! No child except her own ever got a hug from Jackie. Michelle is approachable and Jackie wasn't and that makes all the difference.

I have to say although I knew nothing of her before and she's only been FLOTUS for a short time she's already my favorite.

2. Congratulations to your niece!
Such an honor to have our First Lady speak at the graduation ceremony. My niece is a Junior at GWU. She usually works at the commencement ceremony, so I hope she was able to attend this one.
