1. I've known people like the Ancient Mariner |
|
people who corner you at parties and want to tell you their (endless) life story. Yikes, it's hard to get away from people like that. Yo, Ancient Mariner, I gotta hit the head, then I'm going to get another cold one. You need anything? (as if I intend to return to this tale).

There was an Ancient Mariner And he stoppeth one of three By thy long grey bear and glittering eye Wherefore stoppeth thou me
We had a teacher in the seventh grade who love to make us memorize these poems. I'm 77 and I do remember this and the part about the water.

my dad used to read poetry to my brother and me out of A TREASURY OF THE FAMILIAR sitting in the middle of the bed in my parents room. He would read from Oliver Wendell Holmes (my grandmother was a Holmes), Robert Service, Frost, et al. But he would always read from "The Rime ..."
On a thread the other day someone suggested that this whole BP Oil Fiasco should be hung around the necks of the Republicans. This just naturally came to mind.
. . . round my neck they hung the albatross
....
. . . And a thousand, thousand slimy things lived on, and so did I.

I am glad someone got the metaphor ... I was beginning to wonder (LOL) I guess I should have smeared some more oil on him.
