GOSHEN — Orange County Executive Ed Diana ended speculation about whether he would run for the U.S. Senate seat held by Kirsten Gillibrand by announcing Tuesday that he will not seek higher office.
Diana, a Republican who won his third term as county executive in November, said in a statement that he would stick with the job to which he was just reelected – “a job that I truly love.” He thanked his family, friends and “the many government, business and political leaders” who encouraged him to run.
Diana had been mulling a run against the Democratic senator since February, and had said he would announce his decision earlier this month. At that time, he said he was still weighing such factors as whether he could raise enough money to compete.
Three other Republicans have already lined up to challenge Gillibrand, appointed last year to fill the seat Hillary Clinton vacated last year to become secretary of state. The winner of the election in November will serve the remaining two years of Clinton’s term.
