"REVERSAL: Paul Now Backs Ban On Discrimination By Businesses"
The Rand Paul camp has issued a new statement (via Greg Sargent) saying that Paul does in fact support the power of the federal government "to insure that private businesses don't discriminate based on race."

That appears to be a full reversal from Paul's comment on Rachel Maddow Wednesday night that, referring to the section of the 1964 Civil Rights Act that bars private institutions from race-based discrimination, "had I been around, I would have tried to modify that."

Said Paul spokesman Jesse Benton (who, by the way, was also a spokesman for Ron Paul's 2008 presidential campaign):

"Civil Rights legislation that has been affirmed by our courts gives the Federal government the right to insure that private businesses don't discriminate based on race. Dr. Paul supports those powers."

That goes further than the statement from Rand Paul himself earlier today that endorsed the Civil Rights Act because of its "intent" but fell short of supporting the power of the government to ban racial discrimination by private businesses.

2. From what I was reading in freeperville earlier, you're right! I love it!
He won't win if he loses the teabaggers.

It used to be so easy
living here with you
You were light and breezy
And you knew just what to do
Now you look so unhappy
And you look like a fool.

But it's too late, baby, now it's too late
Though you really did try to make it
Something inside has died
And you can't hide
And you just can't fake it!

17. He was FOR that private right to discriminate BEFORE he was AGAINST it!
Flip-flop! Flip-flop!

Bet you thought the water would be fine, didntcha, randy boy? Bet you thought you were the anointed darling of the media because you're already the anointed savior of CONs everywhere, and the patron saint of the teabaggers, so you were going to be an across-the-board sensation. Bet you thought nobody'd care, or ask you any follow-up questions and just swallow whole anything you said without vetting it or challenging it, and that you'd sail straight into the Senate.

Welcome to the big leagues, randy honey. It's a lot rougher out there than you assumed. And being a libertarian does NOT give you cover OR immunity from closer examination.

Buyer Beware on this one, for sure! At least more people know about him now. One of those teachable moments. And if he IS backtracking on his stand, there goes some of his teabagger support. Not all of them will abandon him, if for no other reason - face-saving. They just HAVE TO be "right", after all! But he's gonna need all the asshole vote he can get if he's going to prevail. Some of them will stick by him because A) they agree with him - either as flat-out racists or that stupid-ass naive pie-in-the-sky libertarianism that only works on paper - UTOPIAN paper at that; or B) some in that camp (probably Pox Noise) attempts to make him a martyr of sorts and go back into their alleged victim-hood at the hands of all us mean ol' liberals. But I suspect there will be many more who are alienated and rethinking their support for him. Now that they know a little more of what he really stands for.

18. Very well put...
as always. It looks like this controversy "has legs" as they say. Even though he put out his statement trying to back-track and "correct" his true feelings/past statements, they're all playing his past statements including the one on Maddow's show last night. Then they "ask" if he really means what he NOW says, and nobody thinks he does. We'll see what happens, but he could really LOSE now if the Dem. opponent plays his cards right.

7. If he'd only had those 20 minutes of confusion on Maddow
it might be, "oh, he's an idiot who had a series of brain farts," but he's been expounding upon these beliefs for a LONG time now, so the walk back is going to have to be more expansive than that and is going to have to come out of the teabagger's mouth--not his spokesman's.

13. On Morning Joe, the were all saying Paul had to "walk back" his comments by the end of the day
or it would be a "blood bath" in Nov. I guess he took their advice. Too late! We got the video tapes!
