What's the political downside to a "bullhorn moment" in the Gulf?
I just don't get it...

The Gulf is being destroyed day by day and Obama's own base is becoming angrier and angrier... why DOESN'T he do SOMETHING to APPEAR that he cares?

Why isn't he personally down there? Not in a helicopter, but on the beach? Why isn't he getting photo-ops with wildlife cleanup crews? Why isn't he ranting about BP? He's great at giving a speech... why doesn't he give a speech literally... from the beach? Show the nation some emotion, maybe even a tear at the destruction. How about some unbridled anger?

This will NOT end well for Obama... state dinners and basketball games... while the Gulf was destroyed...

90% of America was CONVINCED that Shrub "cared" about the nation after 9-11 (look at the polling)... 90% of America NOW currently believes that Obama just "doesn't give a shit."

1. Because a bullhorn moment in the Gulf would be as empty a gesture
as Bush's bullhorn moment on the rubble of the Trade Towers.

And I would LOVE to know where you're getting that "90% OF AMURKA HATES OBUMMER, PRECIOUS, YES THEY DO" stat.

2. if there were a poll asking "Does Obama care about the Gulf"
how well do you think he'd do?

4. I think a majority would answer in the affirmative.
Just because DU is frothing-at-the-mouth-angry doesn't mean the rest of the world is.

And I'd love to know why--WHY--folks here think Obama has some sort of cure-all for the oil spill hidden up his sleeves and he's just NOT USING IT ARGH BLARGH. Or why they think Obama is actively standing in the way of letting the experts figure out a solution. What possible reason would he have to do this?

3. It's been too long now.
He missed the opportunity. Once someone else grabs the bullhorn, it's over.

5. Does Obama going out and raging about this disaster do anything other then make him look helpless?
Looking helpless is not a good look for a President - but he kind of is and we all are.

Can he make any big promises about anything other then that he will make sure BP pays? Not really.

This could very well go on for months.

6. It is a fake gesture. I thought by voting for Obama we realized we were mature enough
Edited on Mon May-24-10 11:25 AM by Jennicut
to handle the truth on our own. Do we really need a Daddy-figure telling us everything will be all right when it won't be? Obama does not do unnecessary drama and I am glad he does not. It is beneath us. Do any of us need constant reassurance that he cares, like Bush "cared"? Spare me...

8. A bush-like empty gesture? No, thanks. Our current President has way too much substance for that.
I can't help imagining Bush, Cheney and Co. chortling with glee over the prospect of the Clown Prince being able to deliver a hokey Hollywood St. Crispin's Day speech from Ground Zero. Dancing, as it were, on the graves of 3,000 murdered New Yorkers to score political points.

President Obama has too much class to do something as awful as that.

Haters, line forms to the right.

I'm stickin'...

9. Obama could have seized this thing as a huge PR opportunity and I'm sure he knows that.
But it seems he has been more interested in actually focusing on what to do about the gusher and exploring solutions (if there even are any). Instead of using a catastrophe for his own political gain, he is actually trying to deal with the catastrophe.

Why are they stalling on this?
