On the Obama speech/escalation: I think people here are misunderstanding each other |
|
I would say that the majority of people who post here are Obama supporters who disagree with him on the war escalation and would like to see the troops come home. Here's where I think the misunderstandings are happening:
Many people are expressing their disappointment with the President and are rightfully very critical. Some people say they are still Obama supporters despite their disagreement here, and some people say they are finished with him and/or that he is no better than Bush. Some Obama supporters read comments from the latter group, and become very angry and express their frustration with what they see as a circular firing squad.
The miscommunication happens on both ends: Some posters see criticism of the circular firing squad as an attack on progressives or anti-war activism, when it may not have been intended that way. On the other hand, sometimes those defending President Obama see strong criticism of his policies as an attack on him and/or a circular firing squad, when it may not have been intended that way. It's a vicious cycle that just keeps going and going.
My point is that a lot of the people that are ripping into each other lately probably agree on the issues, and think they disagree a lot more than they actually do. Some of Obama's toughest critics will vote for him in 2012, and some of his staunchest defenders aren't too crazy about Afghanistan either.

Most of these cheerleaders don't CARE about the issues. This is about supporting their team regardless of the merits of an issue. Obama could announce he is nuking Pakistan and I guarantee they would support it.

4. There is way too much hyperbole on both sides of the argument... |
|
.... that much is certain.
Time and again I realize the irony that we're FIGHTING over whether or not the President isn't as pacifistic as we'd like.
