All you conspiracy theorists: am I on the right track?
Is it possible that the rethugs threw the last election? I know they're power-mad and unprincipled, but a bunch of them are politically shrewd, right? So, think about it: after the debacle of the B*sh administration nearly ruined the US beyond repair, I can't imagine that even the most ambitious, insane rethug would want to take on that mess. So the (R) party presents as their candidate, a grouchy old man, riddled with a history of cancer and a proclivity toward hawkism - this to a war-weary populace. Then, to top off the ticket, as if to guarantee a loss, they throw in an unknown, stunningly inexperienced and incurious, radically far-right religious nut - B*sh in lipstick, squared. This country faced, and continues to face, nearly insurmountable problems: financial/economic catastrophe, two seemingly endless or unwinable wars, one of which was/is fraudulent, a diplomatic reputation in ruin, environmental challenges, including global warming, a growing health care crisis, a failing educational system, a crumbling, neglected infrastructure, a tattered Constitution and torture, for God's sake. We had an increasingly angry citizenry (justifiably) on both sides. Each of these problems is massive. Combined, they're staggering. WHY would any rethug want the job? They created these disasters but didn't really have a clue about how to fix them, therefore my theory.

So, they lost. President Obama is left holding the bag. I haven't agreed with all his decisions. Like most of us on DU, I want it all fixed right now, my way. But I will continue to trust this man who took on a nearly impossible job. He's sure to stumble and I will let him know when I think he's wrong, but I will do my best to support him.

Republican politicians are much too cynical for that.

The OP makes a valid presumption. They knew they'd run things as far into the ground as possible and they knew they'd lose. From that perspective, better to allow an opposition government that they can easily block and make to look incompetent. Even better if they can stimulate more outrage in their predominantly racist base. They assume it will galvanize their base into a backlash next go around.

They plan on allowing Obama one term and bringing in another "St. Ronnie" to "save" the country.

6. My money is on Palin/JEB Bush in 2012. It will
be Bush/Cheney redux only worse. Jeb is a lot smarter and a lot more evil than his brother. W and Palin serve as 'Spokesmodel' figureheads. While PNACers/NWO types like JEB and Cheney and their monied peers really run the show. The American people are the latest, and have been for awhile, colony for the rich this paired with continual war are big money makers for them. It can't be as overt as it used to be, these days it has to be much more subtle and you have to let people think they have a say...

7. Personally I think Palin is a red herring.
But then, I couldn't imagine that Bush would get close enough to steal an election.
