Two Quotes......One from Bush, One from Obama.....
"I am convinced that our security is at stake in Afghanistan and Pakistan," Obama told West Point cadets and a national TV audience Tuesday night.

"For the safety of our people, America must succeed in Iraq," President George W. Bush said in January 2007 when he ordered his 20,000-troop surge.

Both presidents using the same reason. How can one be right and one be wrong?

There is a huge DU Double Standard about the war here on the DU.

1. I saw this in the comments section of the Micheal Moore youtube video.
I found it interesting.

Obama: "We Did Not Ask for This Fight"
Bush: "We Did Not Seek This Conflict"
Obama: "New Attacks are Being Plotted as I Speak"
Bush: "At This Moment ... Terrorists are Planning New Attacks"
Obama: "Our Cause is Just, Our Resolve Unwavering"
Bush: "Our Cause is Just, Our Coalition Determined"
Obama: "This Is No Idle Danger, No Hypothetical Threat"
Bush: "The Enemies of Freedom Are Not Idle"
Obama: "We Have No Interest in Occupying Your Country"
Bush: "I Wouldn't Be Happy if I Were Occupied Either"

2. Partly, Iras had nothing to do with our safety. Afghanistan is a link to Al Qaeda.
I'm still not sure this is a good idea, but the Iraq war was, and is, very clearly a bad idea.

If Bush weren't such an incompetent pile of crap, we'd have stayed focused on Afghanistan, finished there in a year or two and we'd have Osama bin Laden, and never bothered with Iraq.

3. Agreed
If Bush had said that he was sending more troops into Afghanistan, there would have been screaming and the gnashing of teeth here.

But for some reason, when President Obama says it, it's accepted and we get to hear how he made a hard decision that will cost him politically, but it needed to be done.

A double standard indeed.:(

9. Turkmenistan is the last piece...and we really don't need to invade them if they play ball.
They haven't been reliable in the past, but they've become slightly more docile since 2007.

beyondthe cheap comparison to bush, the two different quotes don't even talk about the same countries.

18. The OP makes direct correlations between the statements of Bush and Obama.
You might not like what it says, but it's accurate.

but if it fails Obama fails and I don't want that.

And I have his damn picture because I was a maxed out donor and worked my ass off for him.

11. Of Course there is the minor detail that Saddam wasn't involved in ATTACKING US..
The comments may be similar, but frankly - these situations are NOT.

Iraq was a war where "W" made up a reason to avenge his father's lost war.

Afghanistan is a legitimate issue - there are terrorists currently training to attack American's on American soil. I'll happily agree that THIS is where the war should have been in '03, and we'd be done & finished by now.. but alas, that is not what W left us with.

So say we pull everyone out now.. Al Queda grows & prospers and takes down the Sears tower in 2011 with 3,000 more people inside. You can call that a strawman.. but it happend less then 10 years ago, and they've made no bones about trying to do something bigger & better next time. What is Obama suppose to do.. turn a blind eye and wait for us to get whacked again.. all the while Republicans are sitting by to cheer it so they can again point to our lack of wanting to defend ourselves and easily take the election in '12.

I hate war, but I agree with him on this strategy.

12. One was lying about the threat from Iraq - one ISN'T lying about Afghanistan-Pakistan problems made
worse by the OTHER president's lying about Iraq to distract from Afghanistan mission.

May I ask why you are having difficulty discerning between the two?
