Mullen: Industry has better tech for oil spill
By Associated Press

Responding to suggestions that the military should take the lead in responding to the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff says the oil industry is better-equipped to deal with the disaster.

Speaking Monday on ABC's "Good Morning America," Adm. Mike Mullen said the military has looked at equipment it has available but "the best technology in the world, with respect to that, exists in the oil industry."

Mullen also says any decision on the military taking the lead would come from the president.

The spill, which began after an oil rig exploded off Louisiana's coast, is the worst in American history. According to government estimates, it's already released between 18 million and 40 million gallons of oil into the Gulf.

1. Sure they do..See what a great job they have done so far....
They remind me of the story of the blind men standing around trying to figure out what an elephant is...

John Godfrey Saxe's ( 1816-1887) version of the famous Indian legend,

It was six men of Indostan
To learning much inclined,
Who went to see the Elephant
(Though all of them were blind),
That each by observation
Might satisfy his mind.

The First approach'd the Elephant,
And happening to fall
Against his broad and sturdy side,
At once began to bawl:
"God bless me! but the Elephant
Is very like a wall!"

The Second, feeling of the tusk,
Cried, -"Ho! what have we here
So very round and smooth and sharp?
To me 'tis mighty clear
This wonder of an Elephant
Is very like a spear!"

The Third approached the animal,
And happening to take
The squirming trunk within his hands,
Thus boldly up and spake:
"I see," quoth he, "the Elephant
Is very like a snake!"

The Fourth reached out his eager hand,
And felt about the knee.
"What most this wondrous beast is like
Is mighty plain," quoth he,
"'Tis clear enough the Elephant
Is very like a tree!"

The Fifth, who chanced to touch the ear,
Said: "E'en the blindest man
Can tell what this resembles most;
Deny the fact who can,
This marvel of an Elephant
Is very like a fan!"

The Sixth no sooner had begun
About the beast to grope,
Then, seizing on the swinging tail
That fell within his scope,
"I see," quoth he, "the Elephant
Is very like a rope!"

And so these men of Indostan
Disputed loud and long,
Each in his own opinion
Exceeding stiff and strong,
Though each was partly in the right,
And all were in the wrong!

MORAL.

So oft in theologic wars,
The disputants, I ween,
Rail on in utter ignorance
Of what each other mean,
And prate about an Elephant
Not one of them has seen!

2. So you don't believe Mullen? I think it stands to reason they
have the better equipment and technology. He didn't claim they were competent.

3. Wait a minute, the US military is much better equipped to kill and destroy i
an entire portion of a country. I think Adm. Mike Mullen is downplaying our military's abilities.

4. For the leak, the military does not have the best technology. In fact,
we have no tech for that. For the spill in the ocean, the military might have something. But the military is not prepared for this type of thing. One more thing to think about as we discuss the problems with deep sea drilling. Shouldn't the military have the equipment for this? Probably should.

5. What?!!!?!! And shift money from killing people elsewhere for this stuff?!!!??!
Not hardly. This is BP's problem. The stuff dying in the Gulf isn't the military's problem either. The hole will get plugged in due time.

6. The hole will not be plugged by anything the military can do.
A relief well is your best bet. The military has nothing like the equipment needed to do that. I suppose they could take over and then hire the oil company people to then work as contractors but we still have nothing like that. About two months until the relief well is done...I doubt anything else will work. I am not an engineer, my father in law is. Hearing all the things he has been telling me, it looks like nothing but the relief well was going to work.
