Maureen Dowd's new Obama-bashing piece: |
|
It's not the media that is bad, it's Obama who can't play the game, or something like that. This woman is in a serious crusade against him.

3. Yep. It's just her job |
|
Now that the ox getting gored (pardon the unintended pun) has a D after the name, too many people get their knickers in a twist. Too many forget IT'S HER JOB.
Really confident people don't need to get so defensive all the time. Methinks there is a lot of overcompensating going on with the chorus ;)

The relationship between the press and our elected officials is supposed to be adversarial. Like so many of her ilk, she's forgotten the basic tenets of her profession. She would rather be the news than report it.

I wish they would report the news, not keep trying to manipulate it.

11. umm, Dowd is paid for her opinion, she is NOT a news reporter. |
|
you might want to learn the difference, it's not exactly rocket science. :eyes:
and i bet you didn't even read what she wrote. all she implied was that Obama sends Biden out to deal and shcmooze with the press because HE doesn't like them.
yeah, real "SCATHING".

Biden in person is a very warm, charming guy. And he's a bullshit artist of the first magnitude.
He's the kind of guy that you want to grab by the arm and say, "C'mon, we're going to the bar"!

Ergo, poster's comments were completely in line with the content of her opinion piece. There was no need for you to take such a condescending tone. Did it make you feel better?

And I am fully aware Ms. Dowd makes her living as an OP-ED writer. I am also aware that there's no requirement that an opinion journalist be objective. However, when you compare the work of Ms. Dowd to her boss, Frank Rich, you find that Mr. Rich is able to express opinion without egoism. Ms. Dowd has always struck me as an insecure person, compensating through viciousness.
Regardless of all of that, in this particular piece, she comes to the defense of the Washington DC press. In doing so, she fails to realize the incredible irony of her action. The DC press have all become a bunch of Maureen Dowds, convinced that they are far more relevant and clever than the people and issues they cover. They run around scrounging up sensationalist drama because that gets them on the teevee. Instead of challenging Dubya and his minions, they took the lazy way out and fell for the myth of "access". They were cowed by that administration's threats and smiled gleefully during every dog and pony show. The ones who reported on BushCo favorably were featured on the air. The ones who didn't fell off the planet. The result is that we are now flooded with celebrity journalists who have forgotten how to report actual news. They think that being chummy with politicians is an adequate replacement for investigation.
President Obama is not playing that silly game. If the DC press wants a story, they're going to have to work for it. I've read a number of press pool reports where these "journalists" get butthurt because Obama sneaks off without telling them. They should be ashamed for allowing themselves to become so complacent that they aren't on top of his every move. He isn't going to schmooze with them or serve them canapés. If they want the story, they're going to have to do it the old-fashioned way - leg work.
RIP - Jack Anderson

so far (that have made it past the censors), most are sympathetic to the president and are taking Maureen and the M$M to task for their lack of serious attention to the nation's problems. If modo was expecting any sympathy she's not getting it. :applause:

15. There is a general knowledge that this is not the Press of the JFK |
|
years either, something she avoids. There are far more pundits than Journalists out there, and the whole thing has come back to Yellow Journalism as it's worst.
There is very little actual reporting anymore, it is mostly about people w/access to a camera and filling in time w/anything that comes along...except honest reporting. The days of Huntley/Brinkley and Cronkite are long gone, we don't get news anymore, we get editorials and spitball fights.
When we have a media and "news" organizations that find the death of a celebrity more important than the death of the Northern edge of the Gulf of Mexico, we can see just how bad off we truly are.

Gotta fill up that time somehow. I will say that watching CNN during the oil spill, there is some good reporting on the effects on the environment. But their pundits are terrible.

This is the Times at its worst. She's basically tenured; palsy-walsy with Boy Publisher, a columnist for life. And an utter waste of space.

Someone needs to tell the media to fuck off since it's obvious they either can't do their jobs, or they don't understand what their job is.

when in reality both are nasty pieces of work who will turn on their column subjects at the slightest change in the breeze. Both trashed the Clintons and the Gores with gleeful abandon.
Neither went after the Obamas at first but certainly took the opportunity to sideswipe Desiree Rogers as the eviliest evil that ever eviled when the state dinner crasher fandango happened. Ms. Quinn actually stated that since Ms. Rogers was "not of Washington", then of course something like this was going to happen.
Fuck both of them...

Isn't it ironic? Now that the media's legs have mostly stopped tingling they get thrown under the bus. When they were endlessly trashing his opponent the same people thought that these members of the media were as insightful as the Oracle of Delphi.
