President Eisenhower (R) Named "The King" by Arnold Palmer
Edited on Mon Jun-21-10 12:37 PM by monmouth
Mikey Steele needs to do some homework on the White House golfers. Ike was "the" golfer during his term and conducted a lot of business on the golf course.

Eisenhower was selected in the Lifetime Achievement Category and is the fourth announced member of the Class of 2009, the others being Lanny Wadkins, Jose Maria Olazabal and Christy O'Connor Sr.

The King, Arnold Palmer, said of the prez:

"One would be hard-pressed to find any single person who did more to popularize the game of golf, not only in the United States but throughout the world, than President Eisenhower. His visibility, coupled with his passion for the game, were the inspiration for literally millions of people picking up the game for the first time. Those involved in golf today owe him a great debt of gratitude."

Eisenhower was the most famous golfer in the world - or perhaps a better way to state is that he was the most famous person who was an avid golfer - during his presidency. Ike was in office from 1953-61; at the beginning of that period, according to Don Van Natta, Jr., author of First Off The Tee (compare prices), just over three million Americans were golfers. By the end of his term, more than six million Americans were playing the game. There's even a book about Ike's impact on golf, called Don't Ask What I Shot: How Eisenhower's Love of Golf Helped Shape

1. Another poster on DU told me the merits of Eisenhower and how similar O is to him.
He deserves the Lifetime Achievement nomination if not award. Thanks.

6. Ike...
Top Income Tax rate (on the richest)= 92%

"Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed. This world in arms is not spending money alone. It is spending the sweat of its laborers, the genius of its scientists, the hopes of its children."
---President Dwight Eisenhower

Massive...MASSIVE Public Works Projects (Interstate Hwy system among others)

Eisenhower would be well to The Left of the most recent Democratic Presidents.

There is a lot to like about Ike.

knowing of what he speaks. Steele earlier said President Obama should curtail golf, vacations, ballgames until the spill is resolved.

4. Ike wasn't called "The King" by Palmer. "The King" was a nickname given to Arnold Palmer.

According to Golf Digest, he damn near good, too, better than Eisenhower. His back prevented him from playing more than he did.

Interesting that FDR is on the list as having been a player prior to contracting polio.
