What does the UN know that we don't know?
http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/12/02/obama.world.reax/index.html

United Nations (CNN) -- U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-moon welcomed U.S. President Barack Obama's plan to deploy 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan.

In a written statement, Ban praised Obama's aim to "balance military and civilian efforts" and focus on strengthening institutions and security forces in Afghanistan, noting that it would be a long-term but essential process.

or from the same article Human Rights Watch

Human Rights Watch said Obama's plan needed to strengthen civilian protection with a "clear strategy for combating corruption, removing warlords and holding rights violators accountable."

The human rights organization called the U.S. emphasis on rule of law in Afghanistan "long overdue" but said sufficient training of Afghan security was needed to "ensure basic human rights protections."

11. Yeah, there's reasons for that
Republicans are opposed to its very existence and aren't particularly subtle saying so. Just look at the way the UN was regarded by Bush and Congress through his time in office, to say nothing of under Clinton's presidency after the Republicans took Congress.

It's definitely not the simplistic "the UN's the implacable foe of America and aims to weaken it at every turn" organization it's often defined as by the right.

5. you'll never convince some people around here of that.
These black-or-white, knee-jerk reacting ideologues think they know it all.

These last 24 hours around here have been like being in a dysfunctional family. Sigh.

7. Yeah, if you're a family
of hungry sharks thinking you're smelling Obama blood in the water.

They can enjoy their frenzy..it won't last..There's a lot of bad energy around and Obama is right in the middle of it but he and those who are helping him will get through this.

15. This is along the lines of what Rice was speaking about last night on Rachel's show
She clearly told Rachel that it's not as cut and dry. There is massively complex issue we're facing. She also said that Afghanistan, for all intents and purposes, remains the hellmouth for training future terrorists. Yet Pakistan isn't helping and I'm getting the feeling this goes back to Pakistan and the fact they have nukes.

16. The fact that the U.N. is on board should reassure people
that this isn't Bush-lite. This is a well thought out and well considered plan for an orderly and safe withdrawal. The Afghans and Pakistanis have been told what to expect. Those who want all foreign troops out now can relax and turn their attention to the aftermath and how to keep the Taliban at bay.

One thing they are really against has been our use of predator drones. Hopefully there will be less use of them with more troops in country. It should go a long way toward improving their attitude and convince them that things will be different from now on.

or anti-blasphemy resolutions. I guess this shows how much time I spend on the Religion/Theology board.
