White House backed release of Lockerbie bomber Abdel Baset al-Megrahi
Edited on Sun Jul-25-10 04:24 PM by GSLevel9
expect this to be next weeks "scandal" de jour... from the mainstream corporate media.

http://www.theaustralian.com.au/news/world/white-house-backed-release-of-lockerbie-bomber-abdel-baset-al-megrahi/story-e6frg6so-1225896741041

THE US government secretly advised Scottish ministers it would be "far preferable" to free the Lockerbie bomber than jail him in Libya.

Correspondence obtained by The Sunday Times reveals the Obama administration considered compassionate release more palatable than locking up Abdel Baset al-Megrahi in a Libyan prison.

The intervention, which has angered US relatives of those who died in the attack, was made by Richard LeBaron, deputy head of the US embassy in London, a week before Megrahi was freed in August last year on grounds that he had terminal cancer.

The document, acquired by a well-placed US source, threatens to undermine US President Barack Obama's claim last week that all Americans were "surprised, disappointed and angry" to learn of Megrahi's release.

Scottish ministers viewed the level of US resistance to compassionate release as "half-hearted" and a sign it would be accepted.

The US has tried to keep the letter secret, refusing to give permission to the Scottish authorities to publish it on the grounds it would prevent future "frank and open communications" with other governments.

here we go again...

:sarcasm:

10. unfortunately...

the "truth" no longer matters. 25 million people go to the water cooler and repeat it and it's as good as true.

"if" it were true I would have a problem with it...

Look at the pct of the population that believes Obama is not a US citizen. What is it, 30%?

Yes, we write those people off as a group of grossly misinformed people, which includes a few conspiracy nutcases.

You're not going to change Orly's mind, she's beyond help.

Unfortunately, posting this with the headline as if it's news doesn't help.

14. I'll go a step further.
I think it's people who so hate Obama that they subscribe to the theory as a sign of their hatred. We, in 2010 THINK we live in a healed nation where race has become a non-issue... but in reality, we're about 3 steps away from 1957.

No, we actually don't think that.

13. It's well-known that the evidence against Megrahi didn't stack up. The
Iranians (and possibly other Arabic countries) are widely believed to have been behind it, in retaliation for the shooting down of an Iranian airliner carrying 290 passengers, by the USS Vincennes, allegedly by accident. But it wasn't (geo)politic to accuse Iran or Syria at that time.
