In Speech, Obama Calls Jobs Report a ‘Hopeful Sign’
Sheryl Gay Stolberg, The New York Times

ALLENTOWN, Pa. — President Obama welcomed with a broad smile on Friday the news that the American economy had lost only 11,000 jobs in November as “another hopeful sign.” But he also expressed a note of caution during a swing through this Pennsylvania Rust Belt town, saying, “we have a lot more work to do before we can celebrate.”

Mr. Obama came to Allentown — a city memorialized in a 1980s Billy Joel tune as the place where “they’re closing all the factories down” — to spotlight his administration’s efforts to revitalize the sagging American economy. With millions still out of work, joblessness is the top issue on many minds.

Mr. Obama is under increasing pressure from Democrats in Congress to take new steps to promote job growth. The White House says he will address the issue in detail on Tuesday, and in a speech at Lehigh Carbon Community College here on Friday, the president made no specific promises.

“Even though our economy is growing again, many companies are still reticent to hire, they’re still worried about hiring,” Mr. Obama told a crowd in the college gymnasium. “Some are still trying to get out of the red brought on by this past year. Others have figured out how to squeeze more productivity out of the workers they have, instead of hiring new ones.”

9. My biz and those of fellow biz owners were saved from going under as a direct result
of Obama's stimulus. Coincidently, our businesses weren't counted in the report of jobs saved/created.

Of course, my a$$h*le republican congressman is screaming all over Twitter and Fox about how bad his constituents are fairing economically, all while he denies funding for his constituents. It's all politics with him, focused entirely on taking Obama down, while his constituents suffer. Thank god our business is in a district where funding was put to good use.

What also really pisses me off is republicans are denying funds for and convincing their constituents to push against the California High Speed Rail project. This is an 800 mile high tech project that will employ thousands of construction workers, surveyors, engineers, environmental biologists, geologists, urban planners, administrative staff, local businesses along the entire 800 mile stretch, and on and on...

This project is a massive job generator!

Yet, 3 republican congressmen/women in my region are lobbying against it, even though there will be rail stops right smack dab in the center of their districts. These rail stops will turn these suffering regions into bustling economic hubs of prosperity.

Of course, republicans can't allow prosperity for their constituents. That just might make Obama look good.

Ignore the grumpy meanies. :)

I appreciated this part of his dialogue with the audience:

“I know times are tough, Michelle and I were talking the other day, there are members of our families that are out of work,”
the president said. “We’re not that far away from struggling to pay the bills. Five, six years ago, we were still paying off
student loans.”

I can't imagine Bush II saying that.

5. To Be Fair, Bush Did Have His Share of Personal Economic Hardship
You try owing the Columbian cartel $750,000 because you and your friends snorted the shipment instead of selling it like you were supposed to.

Why do you think that we invaded Panama?

7. Some of the online MSM is awfully tepid on their coverage of this jobs report
I recall MSNBC.com having their huge all caps headlines telling us about big losses but instead the big headline seems to be local news about the VA Tech tragedy and a picture show on climate change.

ABCNews.com puts its headline on the topic in the form of a question. (Is this a good thing?)

CNN.com hides it in little type around Indonesia bar fires and Chelsea Clinton.

CBSNews.com and NYTimes.com actually give it a decent factual billing in the headline.

10. Yep. See my post above. The MSM manufactures illusions.
Sadly, after all that we've been through over the years, the majority of peeps still fall for it.
