He's arguing against the hyperbole so that he doesn't have to address the more substantive criticisms. It's called avoidance. It's not just a political strategy, for some it's a coping mechanism. Blame the messenger is a well known method for denial.

The hill interviewed Gibbs and came away with about three direct quotes from him bemoaning unfair criticism from the left, with no indication as to what they asked him. I can see why this is causing so much controversy.
