Obama to Sign Manufacturing Bill on Wednesday
WASHINGTON (AP) -- The White House says President Barack Obama will sign a bill on Wednesday that will help U.S. manufacturers by reducing and suspending some tariffs on certain materials they must import to make their products.

Obama is scheduled to sign the bill at the White House.

The National Association of Manufacturers says it will help create jobs, cut costs for businesses and consumers and boost U.S. exports. The industry trade group says studies show that the bill would increase production by $4.6 billion and support 90,000 jobs.

The association says manufacturers rely on the tariff suspensions to get raw materials and other products that aren't readily available in the U.S.

5. This could be good news, but there's not a lot of info in the article.
If we have or have had tariffs on certain materials, why can't we have compensatory tariffs on imports of finished or semi-finished good from countries that do not have or do not enforce laws comparable to ours on worker organizing, worker safety, anti-discrmination (age, gender, race, ethnic orgin or religion), and all environmental regulations?

You know, the kind of things that Richard Gephardt failed to pursue as a side letter when NAFTA passed under that enemy of the working family, Bill Clinton.

Will Obama demand those countervailing tariffs in his new, bright and shiny "free trade" pact with South Korea?

I don't care if Gibbs wants to give me a blood test. I need permanent employment in my home state of Michigan so that I can help my 88-year-old Mom and her 89-year-old Swedish bachelor farmer brother (nod to Garrison Keillor--they come in the Swedish model, too, and my town used to have an ice melt, but it was the VFW who put it on, not the Sons of Knute). P.S. I'm an only child. I'll f*897ing any d(&%^$(d test he wants to give me, so long as I can get back to help out.

6. Well, that post kinda killed the buzz, dinnit? :)
Just kidding.

You've raised a crucial question:

If we have or have had tariffs on certain materials, why can't we have compensatory tariffs on imports of finished or semi-finished good from countries that do not have or do not enforce laws comparable to ours on worker organizing, worker safety, anti-discrmination (age, gender, race, ethnic orgin or religion), and all environmental regulations?
