One-fifth of Pakistan is under water.

http://thinkprogress.org/2010/08/12/one-fifth-of-pakistan-is-under-water/

-snip-

– The fasting month of Ramadan began yesterday in sorrow for 14 million Pakistanis, as one fifth of the nation is underwater from the worst monsoon-related floods in living memory.

– Weeks of flooding and landslides in China have affected over 140 million people in 28 provinces as rivers like the Yangtze, the Yellow and the Songhua have swollen from the extreme rains.

– Germany, Poland and the Czech Republic face millions of dollars of damage after flooding rains last weekend carved a “swath of destruction,” killing at least 11 people and damaging hundreds of homes and businesses.

– Russia’s unprecedented heat wave, which has killed thousands and caused $15 billion in damage to the country’s economy, may be the “first disaster unequivocally attributable to anthropogenic climate change.”

anywhere, except Wall Street.

2. Not too worry. It will snow soon and prove that climate change is a hoax.

3. How often does something have to happen before it's no long "unprecedented?"
I mean, it seems as if "unprecedented" natural disasters are becoming the new normal -- IOW, precedented. Maybe it's time we hunker down and deal.

4. Secretary Clinton: To help the people of Pakistan, text SWAT to the number 50555.
The Secretary concluded, "I also want to mention a way that American citizens can contribute to this relief effort. Using your cell phones, you can text the word 'SWAT' 's-w-a-t' to the number 50555. And you will make a $10 contribution that will help the UN High Commissioner for Refugees provide tents, clothing, food, clean drinking water, and medicine to people displaced by floods. When prompted, reply with 'yes' 'y-e-s' to confirm your gift. I just texted a contribution myself, because we know from our own experience, particularly in Haiti, small donations can add up to make a big difference. And Americans have always shown great generosity to people facing crises worldwide. So I urge Americans to join this effort and send some much needed help to the people of Pakistan."

(I think this is a great idea to show the people of Pakistan our concern at this incredibly perilous time. Made my $10 contribution yesterday. You do not need to respond other than to reply YES to confirm your gift.)
