Image the 12/21/2012 mania and its effect on voter turnout in Nov 2012. Why vote if you |
|
believe all is lost in a month? Candidates will spend their time trying to convince people the world will still be there for Christmas.
Only Palin will have a message for her followers, all others will stay home.

fundie crapola. More like new-agey crapola. Shouldn't have much effect on rapturists and similar dimbulbs.

Coders corrected. The IT Industry took a lot of flack for successfully solving an issue. Computers would have crashed. Dates and files would have been stored wrongly, but programers spent many hours correcting the code.
Do you wish it was not done so that you couldhave seen what the problem was?

20. Actually I never heard about "millions" buying survival food. More like . . . |
|
A few hundred who probably would do the same if someone in Muskogee saw the image of 666 in a Breakfast Burrito and reported it to the local news.
What I do remember is full employment in the high-tech sector, with consultant programmers fixing thousands or millions of software systems that were, sure as shootin', going to fail without the upgrade. As I recall, very few did fail. You can call that a scam or a successful response to a techno-crisis, depending upon your point of view.
My point being that 2012 apocalypse folks are few and far between and have to take a number and queue up with the 2009 apocalypse nuts, and the 2010 apocalypse crazies, and the 2011 apocalypse fanatics . . .

12. What on earth do you mean - "if it is worth running for a second term" ? |
|
Only those who are so gullible that they are a danger to themselves will be thinking the world will be about to end. But, since there is not a single bit of evidence or reason for anything whatsoever happening in Dec 2012, I think that even the really stupid voters will have ignored the movie and hucksters by then. There's only so many times that they can reply to "why is the world about the end?" with "just trust me, it is" before people get bored with them.
But I think that the vast majority of Democratic (or Obama-supporting, however you want to put it) voters have IQs above room temperature.

14. The dumb people vote for Republicans, or fringe candidates (Natural Law/Yogic Flying, perhaps?) |
|
Worrying about a handful of idiots not turning out because they're crapping their pants due to some conmen is the most defeatist thing I've ever seen on DU. Anyone dumb enough to think the world is about to end will have lost all their money in other scams already, eg Nigerian emails, so it won't make any difference to fundraising.
What 'losing situation' are you forseeing? Is your attitude to elections "if it's not 100% certain we'll win, it'd be better not to stand, just in case there's a way we could lose?" If it is, then you'd never win anything.

18. Educate me, then, wise one -WTF does "Why put the president in a losing situation" mean? |
|
What is that, if not a ridiculous moan of "I don't really care about winning elections"?
What is your estimate of the number of thick-as-pigshit Republican voters, compared to thick-as-pigshit Democratic voters? I feel the number of idiot Republicans who said they were stocking up on ammo and guns in 2008 is an indication there are more stupid Republicans who can be fooled into thinking they're Going To Loose It All.

24. Depending on the 2010 elections is one area. Another is July 2011 troop withdrawal. |
|
We will probably lose 5 senate seats in 2010. Will unemployment be still around 10%.
Will we need to go for a draft to relieve the army, I think so. None of which bodes well for a second term.

This is just another way to "worry" that maybe he should step down so that we have a chance. You know, against Palin, the candidate with a MESSAGE!
It's simple: People who don't get off their asses to vote get the government they deserve, and forfeit their right to complain about it.

She's my movie-buddy, but as she likes action films and I don't, she has to give me the reviews on them. She did get me in to see District 9, though, and we agreed that the plot carried that one well.
But jeez-louise, I don't get these people that think a freakin' movie like 2012 is some kind of prophecy from a Mayan calendar or a 1st-century AD fiction writer. How dumb do you have to be?

16. For the Republicans to have a viable shot at the White House in 2012 they |
|
would have to plan to lose the election.
That is to say, to be viable they would have to cut the malignant tumor of the Far Right fundie nutbags and teabaggers out of their flesh and then hobble on to some kind of recovery by redefinition in a far more moderate, problem-solving, cool-browed modality. If they try to remove the malignancy, it likely will kill the patient. Their other choice is to let the tumor grow and kill the patient over a longer period with far more pain.
They should -- but cannot -- implement a no-teabagger, no nutbag, no fundie rule and nominate people who are in the Chuck Percy mode of Republican politics, if they can find one or two to slap onto a ticket.
Very frankly I don't think that has any chance of happening.

All those religious zealots on the right and ... how to put this gently ... "naive and gullible" people on the left who buy into the nonsense staying home because they think the world will end a month after the 2012 election? That scenario would be nothing but a EPIC WIN for the rational people who show up at polls.
And by the way, some scholars believe the calendar we use (supposed to be based off the birth of Jesus) is off by about 4-6 years, which would make this 2013-2015, not 2009. Just some lol for thought. :P

... which would not be a bad thing. If Palin has them all ginned up to vote for her because they think she'll be leading them through the End Times, that *would* be a bad thing unless she is splitting the Repub Party, in which case it would be a good thing.
The rest of us, who are not insane, will be checking our list of candidates and starting our Christmas shopping. We'll also be making appointments on our January 2013 calendar page.
