Meek Opens 15-Point Lead Over Greene
Kendrick Meek has opened up a "commanding" 45-to-30 lead over Jeff Greene in the Democratic Senate primary contest, a new Sunshine State News Poll reports.

Meek's margin in the Aug. 9-12 survey of likely voters is even bigger than the 8-point spread he enjoyed in his own internal poll conducted Aug. 10.

"Meek's margin is broad-based and includes leads with most key voter groups, including those who say they have an 'excellent' chance of voting -- 46 to 30 percent over Greene," said Jim Lee, president of Voter Survey Service, which conducted the statewide poll for Sunshine State News (see methodology below).

The Miami congressman also holds substantial leads in two other key voter demographics: up 8 points among senior citizens and up 19 points among "super voters" who cast ballots in both the 2006 and 2008 Democratic primaries.

1. I believe Pres. Clinton is with him either today or tomorrow in Delray. He
will gain on that also.

2. Kendrick Meek hoping for boost from Bill Clinton
<snip>

"On the scale of 1 to 10," U.S. Senate candidate Kendrick Meek says of Bill Clinton's visit to Florida on Monday, "this is an 11."

Locked in a tough Democratic primary and polls showing no obvious winner, Meek is hoping the 42nd president will provide the boost he needs in the final week.

If anyone can deliver, it's Clinton, whose love among Democrats seems to be only outmatched by love from Democrats in South Florida, where the two will campaign together -- eight days before the primary.

"It will help bring about clarity," said Meek, who has been far outspent by billionaire rival Jeff Greene.

Clinton and Meek will appear together at three rallies, starting in Palm Beach County, then Broward and ending in Miami-Dade. Demand was so high for the 4:30 p.m. Palm Beach County rally that a larger venue had to be reserved, Meek's campaign said.

Broward's rally will be at 6:45 p.m. at the Signature Grand, 6900 State Road 84; Miami-Dade's will be at 8 p.m. at the Gusman Theater, 174 E. Flagler St. in downtown Miami.

The TV coverage alone could be worth the equivalent of millions in campaign ads.

"This is pivotal for Kendrick," said U.S. Rep. Alcee Hastings, D-Miramar. "The locations are hotbeds for Democratic activists and it will generate a buzz that Kendrick should be able to ride into the 24th primary successfully."

3. I'm really hoping for Meek.
Trust me about this. If Meek makes it into the Senate he will be the most honest Senator we ever had. Why? Because he's going to be under the microscope. Reporters will report every flaw, unlike they do with everybody else.

Florida's senatorial candidates have voters undecided, annoyed
By Adam C. Smith and Beth Reinhard, Times/Herald Staff Writers

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In an election year already defined by surprises and shake-ups, the St. Petersburg Times/Miami Herald/Bay News 9/Central Florida News 13 poll underscores the unpredictable Florida electorate. In the homestretch before the Aug. 24 primary, nearly one-third of Democrats have not made up their minds between Greene and Meek.

Looking ahead to Nov. 2 with Greene as the Democrat, voters only barely favor independent candidate Charlie Crist over Republican Marco Rubio, 32 percent to 30 percent, within the poll's margin of error. Greene trails at 19 percent.

If Meek wins the Democratic nomination, the picture looks slightly better for Crist. He beats Rubio 33 percent to 29 percent, while Meek gets 17 percent.

But in a potentially major advantage for Rubio, the poll of registered voters found that three-quarters of Republicans said they were certain to go the polls, while less than half of Democrats said they were a sure bet. The stronger motivation among Republican voters reflects polls nationwide and has boosted the party's hopes of taking back Congress in November.

"The big question for the Democrats is whether they're going to be able to reduce this gap and minimize it,'' said Ipsos Public Affairs pollster Julia Clark. "There's still some time to rally the troops."

The telephone survey of 602 registered voters was conducted Aug. 6-10 by Ipsos Public Affairs, a Washington, D.C.-based independent, nonpartisan research company. The margin of error was plus or minus 4 percentage points overall, 6.4 percentage points for questions based only on Democrats and 5.9 for those based only on Republicans.

An Aug. 9-11 Mason-Dixon poll showed markedly different results. Among likely Democratic primary voters, Meek was crushing Greene, 40 percent to 26 percent. For the general election, the poll showed Rubio leading with 38 percent, compared to 33 percent for Crist and 18 percent for Meek. It had a margin of error of plus or minus four percent.
