1. The right has been co-opting the left's causes, rhetoric, and icons at least since Reagan
Realizing how popular these things are (coming from and speaking to "the people" as they do), the right regularly takes language and ideas from Thomas Paine, MLK, et al., and uses them to mask their agenda, which does not come from or speak to "the people."

Unfortunately, as the confusion over terms like "socialist" and "fascist" indicates, so many people are so unaware of our radical/liberal history (and how it has benefited them) that they can't see how they're being conned and manipulated (Tea Party, anyone?).

2. If they can redo Jesus' image into that of a Hateful Prick on Steroids
Edited on Mon Aug-23-10 08:31 AM by lunatica
who wants vast Christian Armies to carry guns to churches, why shouldn't they have the right to redo MLK Jr's image into a gun-toting radical racist nazi teabagger? Glen Beck is certainly for equal opportunity.

What could teabaggers want to possibly reclaim from Martin Luther King's dream? Duh! The right to be as racist as they were when he was alive. If it hadn't been for him racist teabaggers would be naturally superior because that's the natural order of things. And everyone knows you mustn't disturb the natural order of things. Especially Christian things and gun things.

:sarcasm:

4. I hate to say this and I don't like violence
but I wonder and wonder why someone has not beaten the crap out of this guy before now. He is as racist as they come and yet he has the gall to try to "pretend" he is one of MLK's followers'.

6. He was punched out once before, when he was a morning DJ
Edited on Mon Aug-23-10 10:20 AM by Jennicut
on KC101 in Connecticut in the early 90's. I guess he pissed off another DJ in a Clear Channel parking lot. Lots of other people who worked with Beck were very happy with that as Beck was always a total asshole. I used to listen to Beck in the morning when I got ready for high school. I still cannot believe that idiot made it this big but he definitely is manipulative.

11. Glenn Beck has become the right-wing version of Peter Finch's character in "Network", that 1976 film
If you watch it, the economic, political, and social conditions back then were much like they are now.

He was complaining about gas prices were too high, lots of people were out of work, the banks and oil companies controlled everything, including the politicians, and people were in a funk.

Sound familiar?

Peter Finch's character tells people to go outside and scream "I'm as mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore". He got his own TV show where he ranted about anything and everything, and it soon became a huge circus sideshow.

The ratings were huge, but then began plummeting.

You know what eventually happened to him? The TV network decided he was literally more useful dead than alive, and had him killed on air, during sweeps week, for the ultimate ratings jump.

So, Glenn Beck, I'm just saying. Who knows when Roger Ailes, head of Faux News, will come to the same conclusion?

23. Glenn Beck is no Howard Beale...
Network is one of my favorite movies of all time, the network in that movie does in many ways resemble FOX News but the only thing Glenn Beck has in common with Howard Beale is that they were both crazy. The key difference between Beck and Beale is that Beale actually spoke the truth, yes he spoke that truth in an insane manner that in some ways resembled the screaming talking heads of today but as crazy as it was it did have a basis in reality. The network eventually had him killed in large part because they did not like what he was saying on the air, FOX on the other hand loves Glenn Beck and no matter how many advertisers pull away from him FOX will always stand beside him because he is very effective at pushing the corporate agenda on their viewers. FOX does not stick by Beck because of the profit motive, so many advertisers have left his show that he makes them far less money than another anchor could. FOX sticks by Glenn Beck not for money but for influence, they want to shape America to their vision and Beck is the person who helps them do that.

18. He should quote this 1964 statement by King.
I had no alternative but to urge every Negro and white person of goodwill to vote against Mr. Goldwater and to withdraw support from any Republican candidate that did not publicly disassociate himself from Senator Goldwater and his philosophy.

20. Beck wants to reclaim the dream
but NOT Martin Luther King's dream. Obviously, he's never read the "I Have A Dream" speech, much less comprehended it, because he would include the phrase I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal."

He and his ilk don't agree with THAT part. :grr:
