BLUE DOG-Congressman Jokes that Pelosi Might Die
August 26, 2010

Congressman Jokes that Pelosi Might Die
Rep. Bobby Bright (D-AL) dodged criticism about voting for Nancy Pelosi (D) as House Speaker by suggesting she might not be available for the job next year if Democrats retain control, the Montgomery Advertiser reports.

The freshman congressman joked that Pelosi "might lose her own election, decide not to run for the speaker's job or otherwise not be available. He suggested, jokingly he insisted to his audience, that Pelosi could fall ill and die in coming months. That remark drew laughter from the crowd."

11. From what I hear, Nancy never forgets friends, favors-- or disrespect and thanklessness
Sooner or later, this Bobby person will be sorry he said that.

It's all part of why Nancy Pelosi is so effective. She's no pushover.

13. Nancy is Tom D'Alesandro's daughter. She knows how to play the game.

16. Yes indeed. She learned it all at her father's knee
Years and years ago the Los Angeles Times Magazine did an lengthy piece on her that included a lot of info about her upbringing. I loved it -- when she was barely old enough to hold a ballpoint pen she was keeping her father's books on political favors given and received. IIRC, it was on yellow legal pads and was all the very local currency of things like a turkey basket to the Jones family at Thanksgiving, help with getting zoning for Tolletti's son to build a gas station, and much more. When it came time to walk the precinct, make phone calls, and generally GOTV, D'Alesandro's people knew exactly who to call on. I know it was more complicated than that, but I was struck by how young she learned the family trade.

The article was written in the context of her being the House after having raised 5 children, and I think on the cusp of becoming House Minority Leader, although it might have been earlier still. Her opponents wanted to paint her as a tiny wifey-mommy person with no practical experience, and Dems like me who lived in SoCal had never heard of her. She had been very busy with California Democratic politics while raising her kids, though, and was known to be extremely powerful behind the scenes.

As far as I can tell, Speaker Pelosi has political instincts down to the bone, and is doing okay for us.

10. Demonizing Pelosi
I guess that's how a Democrat wins votes in Alabama!

I called and voiced my displeasure.

12. Not funny. He's only good for keeping the repubs from having that seat.
After that Bright is pretty much useless.

14. If I was Pelosi I would take him off the Armed Services and Agricultural committees.
That should hurt him and make his constituents have second thoughts about him.

17. Ag is already considered a low-tier committee
usually given to members without much seniority. Maybe he's there for a reason.

18. Are you sure about that?
If I represented a district that is mostly agricultural I would think it would be important to my constituents.

15. I trust Bobby will be returning his money from DCCC...
...where he's one of the FRONTLINE (at-risk incumbent) candidates. After all, Speaker Pelosi helped raise a lot of that money, and I'd hate for him to be tainted...
