He passed health care in a little over a year. He ended the Iraq war. He averted a Great Depression. This guy gets shit DONE. This guy is a winner. This guy is going to bring peace to the Middle East, once and for all.

I feel it. Obama is something else.

Edited on Wed Sep-01-10 07:36 PM by slay
he never even TRIED to fight for a public option hell he wouldn't even talk about it. He's just not a good leader. The shit he gets done is a technical win at best, with no substantial change. Also, he's covering up the major crime of the WAR of aggression and profit in Iraq. AND AND - he's ESCALATED another pointless war in Afghanistan while people here in the USA are losing their jobs, and their homes! I'm not sure if you believe what you wrote potassiumnitrate, or if you just wish it was true. But no, he doesn't "got it", he's never gonna get it, and he's losing what's left of his base - those he hasn't already lost. I wish what you said was true. It's not.

Lots of propaganda from GD:P today.

Which you apparently agree with? ("Obama's gonna do it. I feeeeeel it!!!")

You're the ones who act like the guy's a Jedi master and then as soon as it's pointed out how much he's not doing, you trot out the "he's not a magician" strawman. Which is it?

85. Yes: a personality cult amplified by insecure egos of those who have to shriek down any opposition
It's much more important for certain partisans to hammer down any dissenters and apply peer pressure than it is to actually stand for something. That's why many of us use the term "cult": not only is the blinkered adulation something that survives repeated jettisoning of liberal or progressive policies, it has the tempestuous fury of the insecure egos who dread more than anything the judgment of having been wrong, and hold their selfish need to be morally superior above all else, including the general welfare or even basic sense.

Meanwhile, the administration spends fruitless energy courting those who will never be swayed, while systematically haranguing the left and not even trying for progressive policies. Timidity is too nice and bland a term for this kind of ultramoderate favor-currying, and the self-aggrandizing enablers are enough to make one gag.

23. Got some cheese to go with that whine??
Across the board, Obama has done pretty much what he said he would do.

As for "technical change" ... my 12 year old niece, who had cancer at 2, and survived against a 90% death rate, and who could not be insured because of her pre-existing condition since ... NOW has AFFORDABLE full heath coverage. That's not a "technical change" it is REAL CHANGE.

Obama said he would increase troops in Afghanistan as a candidate, and he has ... yet you sound surprised that he did so. Were you not paying attention?

Obama said he'd be as careful getting out of Iraq as we were careless getting in. Which means no abrupt withdraw. He said his target was to remove all combat troops in 16 months. It will actually be 19 months. Yes, we will still have some troops there, just as Obama said as a candidate.

So, while one can bitch that Obama needed to remove all troops, what one can not do is claim that Obama has not done what he said he would do.

As for losing his base ... total BS ... your "base" does not jump off the band wagon when the team struggles. Your BASE fights for you, and with you, particularly when you struggle. The GOP base understands this.

So .. if you want to call yourself the base, then get on board and fight first and foremost against the GOP. If not, stop claiming that you are the base. Because you are not. You jumped on a band wagon expecting something different then what was actually promised, and now you want to jump off.

Every Dem who voted for Health Insurance Reform needs to run an ad with someone like your niece. Then they can also say the Republicans want to repeal it/voted against it. If they personalize these stories, those will be very powerful ads - and honest, truthful ads.

The only president who could bring peace to the Mideast is Jed Bartlet.

This is the fourth president who has stepped in to that morass. He will have no better success than those who came before. But if he does pull it off, let me know so I can be there when walks across the Potomac.

I'm not saying he shouldn't try. But a little realism must factor into the discussion.

53. I'd feel a little better about Obama having fixed health care...
...if Blue Cross hadn't just raised our rates another 30% this year. The small company I work for, which goes through a tedious yearly process of shopping the local health insurance market, has now switched to United. The rates are still much higher than last yesr, and our company, which is does its best to keep us insured, ate most of that increase, which means I'll probably have to go another year without a raise.

I've gotten two 50 cent raises in the last 5 years because of this shit, while gasoline and utility prices have doubled and food prices have also inflated sharply.

I realize that many people who couldn't get insurance will be helped by the bill, but the vast majority of American individuals and businesses will still have to deal with this out-of-control profit-sucking monster for many years to come. I see no hope at all for my situation to improve with the health care legislation they passed.

But I guess that just makes me an ungrateful, whiney leftist.

56. I feel so torn sometimes....
I agree with you, and I also agree that the HR bill is already having positive effects.

But I also am aware that, like cleaning out a nasty oven, there's a lot of cruddy shit to grapple with before it's clean..... I just wish this oven weren't so sabotaged by the RightWingCONservativeCorporatistMediawhore junta every step of the way. Then again, that very reaction from them, in itself, measures the significance of the change. And then, I'm back to being upset at the suffering that is going on in people's lives. And then I'm back to knowing that there IS improvement happening, already helping people, and then sadness knowing that change in reality takes time to manifest consistently and broadly......

I look forward to the Consumer Commision, and hope that it would include the predatory insurance industry in its sights.

61. I see the glass half-full/half-empty at this point
I acknowledge the great reduction of troops in Iraq, and the scaling down of the occupation there. However, we still do have a presence in Iraq, there's still killing going on in Afghanistan, and there are numerous hot spots smoldering all over the region.

There's still a lot of work to do.

70. Yup. You can count on Benjamin Netanyahu to be a trustworthy peace broker.

Uh, I don't think so. It's pointless to broker peace talks to which that snakey fucker is a party.

83. Things were much better under Bill Clinton.
Shit hit the fan basically the moment Bush took office, and it all stagnated for 8 years.

It should be no surprise that things will improve under Obama.

90. He might use the military to force peace.
Samantha Powers was on tv talking about the palestinian genocide and that using military strength might be necessary. The UN and the allies have been preparing for some time now to go in and enforce the border agreement, it wouldn't work if Israel or Palestine were to try do this themselves so having a foreign police force is a problem. Neither state will want to give up its ability to fight and defend. If one looks at the white house advisors on foreign affairs, it is loaded with people who are inclined to stand up to Israel and force the issue, this is no secret if one looks at the people listed on whitehouse.gov and checks their prior views. Obama has 300 advisors, way more than Bush had so he is serious about forcing peace, as he should be.

This summer there were planned military exercises in the mediterranean which were then joined by many other countries and this seemed to be a surprise to many since the other countries had not been openly planned to participate. It looked like a show of force right after the flotilla incident. France, Germany, UK, Greece, Italy, portugal, spain and a few more, practiced on each others ships and planes, no one in our media mentioned this historic event. The european media and middle eastern media reported. The quartet has been involved as well as the arab union. Lots of military equipment has been sold to countries for missile defense that looks like it may be to strengthen defense world wide and make aggression from bully countries less likely, but I am not sure if that is why so many countries were armed. I was in Africa right after this happened and saw a lot of changes going on all ready, nation building and new constitutions. I do think peace will come, the question is why are the news and other media not covering this? Who is upset in the media and does not want to broadcast this show of strength by the USA and the rest of the world?

Obama has also been kicking some corporate butt with bribery and corruption charges, going after military contractors who defrauded the government as well as pharma. The DOJ has raked in billions in fines and none of this is reported, none of the corruption battles that the administration has won for the little guy. Obama is a great president and we are lucky to have him and I bet this is one reason the media has been so vicious.
