At least part of the answer is that there was a huge pent up demand for manufactured goods that didn't go away real fast. Besides the obvious need for all the things people couldn't get during the war (cars, tires, etc.) much of europe had to be "rebuilt". The US economy benefitted greatly from that. I've heard more than one explanation that by the late '60s or early '70s it was becoming obvious that the rebuilding had completed and that tough times were comiing.
