There’s been lots of recent buzz that Louisiana Secretary of State Jay Dardenne is looking to challenge Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) in the Republican primary, and he confirmed his interest in the race in an interview with the Baton Rouge Advocate.
Dardenne told the paper he’s looking at commissioning a poll to assess his viability and, to do that, he’d have to form a Senate exploratory committee.
"I’ve had a lot of people suggest that I do that. I’d have to raise some money. I may do that,” Dardenne said.
The last public poll testing a Vitter-Dardenne matchup was conducted by Research 2000 back in March, and suggested the freshman senator would face serious competition from the Secretary of State. Vitter led Dardenne, 43 to 32 percent, but well below a 50 percent majority considered comfortable territory for an incumbent.
In a Rasmussen poll conducted in October, Dardenne outperformed Vitter in a general election matchup against Democratic congressman Charlie Melancon. Vitter led Melancon by 10 points, 46 to 36 percent, while Dardenne held a 13-point lead over Melancon, 46 to 33 percent.
