Plouffe: Dems on 'right path' after 'assault' by GOP on middle class
I think Plouffe is on the right path: the hypocritical rethugs are trying to run on the fact that the Dems haven't improved economic prospects, but the main reason for that is rethug obstruction with no new ideas. More of this, please!

Plouffe: Dems on 'right path' after 'assault' by GOP on middle class
By J. Taylor Rushing - 09/05/10 11:43 AM ET

Presidential adviser David Plouffe on Sunday cast the November elections as a choice between "the right path" for the country's fiscal health, or an "assault" on middle-class families under Republican rule.

Speaking on NBC's "Meet The Press," Plouffe, who managed President Obama's successful 2008 campaign, said Republicans created the current economic recession and don't deserve the chance to control policy again.

"Their policies contributed to the worst economic crisis this country has seen since the Great Depression," Plouffe told host David Gregory. "If they had their way, we might have headed into a depression -- opposing the Recovery Act.
No one's satisfied with where we are. The question is, 'Are we making progress?' We had 22 straight months in this country of private-sector job loss. We've had eight straight months of private-sector job gains. Not as high as anyone would like, but we're on the right path here."

Pressed by Gregory about polls that show many Americans don't believe the economy is recovering, Plouffe said voters are understandably frustrated.

"They're right to be frustrated," he said. "But the question we have to put in front of people in these next two months is that this is a choice, and Republican ideas were soundly rejected at the ballot box for the past two years. They're offering nothing new -- the same old policies that... drove this country into the ditch. And if we give the keys back to the people who did this, it would be like giving Herbert Hoover the keys in the mid-1930s."

5. An Oval Office speech every night.
No coverage? No access.

6. Hmmm. That would be a first, wouldn't it. I
actually kind of like that idea, but it would water down any serious future oval office speeches if it's done so consistently.

And boy, can I already see the negative press that would inspire.

7. Demanding access to the airwaves is the real point.
Speak to the "base."

If you're really a corporate tool the message will be laid bare.

If not, it's marching orders.

Hell, hold an Oval Office speech every hour on the hour...

8. Obama is hitting the road this week, getting the message out.
Granted, probably not every hour on the hour, but he'll get a lot of press for what he does.

I think the real problem is who will be listening, who is responsible enough to try to understand what is going on? I 'get' that people lead busy lives, but this is also important.

It drives me nuts that folks think about everything unilaterally; if this economy sucks, let's change to the other party, maybe they'll do better. What happened to the past 8 years that got us here in the first place? Lots of people don't even think about that.

13. I disagree that we're on the right path
the right path would have been to inject money DIRECTLY into workers' pockets with WPA style programs...NOT saving banks who used money to buy up other banks.
the right path would have been to at least offer SOME kind of government funded healthcare to compete with the stranglehold for-profit insurance and pharma has on our healthcare system.
And the right path would be to find OTHER alternatives to fix education problems in money-starved districts other than turning them over to corporate-funded charter school boosters.

It's not the pace...it's the direction.

15. We got what we were able to get. The stimulus wasn't
'enough' because the rethugs refused. It still worked and will work for a lot of people. Sure, more needs to happen. It would be nice if rethugs jumped right on board. Don't ever forget: they voted for NOTHING to help Americans.

The health care reform is all we could get given the contentiousness at the time, and it was passed. Sure, it's not perfect, again, because no one would help make it stronger, especially the party of "no".

Tell me about direction and pace, when this admin has been combating rethugs since the get-go. When you find out how to make miracles happen, I'm all ears.

14. Such a simple message that needs to be repeated
Glad to see Plouffe out there making the case, the dems should have been saying this every day for the past year, but at least if they start now its better than nothing. They need to keep hammering the GOP on the fact that they have no ideas to help fix the economy, if they can make that clear it will only benefit us.

16. Don't vote for the wolves in November -
Vote for the wolves in sheep's clothing.

That's the ticket.

Of course it is set up so that there is not any real choice.

Vote for a Republican and you get continuation of NAFTA. Vote for a Democrat, you still get a continuation of NAFTA.

Vote for a Republican, you get endless unwinnable wars for profit. Vote for a Democratic, you get endless unwinnable wars for profit.

Vote for a Republican you get nuclear energy, or vote for a Democrat, you still get nuclear energy.

Don't expect anything resembling decent AFFORDABLE health coverage for most wage earners and unemployed and poverty stricken (though it works out great for those who are in the executive halls of the Corporate America.)
