NY Daily News: President Obama is unlikely to face a Democratic foe in 2012 primary

WASHINGTON - The Democratic left still smarts over President Obama's failure to deliver on some of its key issues, but has made no serious move to challenge him in 2012.

Even the loudest critics among them think putting up a primary candidate would just split the party and strengthen the Republican who runs against him or her.

"There is beginning to be some chatter about running a candidate from the left, but nobody wants to think that way," said Peter Daou, a liberal blogger and ex-digital media adviser to Hillary Clinton's campaign.

The left's grievance list is long. They believe Obama is infatuated with centrist, independent voters at the expense of the liberal agenda. Many want U.S. forces out of Afghanistan.

He (and his apologists) can't stand up there and shrug their shoulders and say "Well it's the best we can do with the Senators we have" when major reforms get watered down because of the obstructionist tantrums of someone like Blanche Lincoln and then not have it be a slap in the face when he goes out and campaigns for her.

I mean I know they all think we're stupid and I know they take our votes for granted and I know they sneer at even having to think about placating the liberal base with even the most modest scraps......but can they at least try and hide it a little?

2. For me it depends on what transpires during the lame duck congressional session occuring after the

upcoming election. If Social Security is left fully intact, an argument can be made either way - for or against a primary challenge. Otherwise...well, let's just not go there until we need to.

7. The only reason that nobody's talking about 2012 primaries yet

is that most progressives seem to think that there won't be Democratic losses in November, or that they will be minor. When the Rethugs take over the House and the Senate, the blame game will go into high gear.
