Worst headline I've seen all day

September 08, 2010 12:43 pm ET by Jocelyn Fong

Today Fox News published an article stating that in his speech today, President Obama will endorse the extension of all the Bush income tax cuts except those that only benefit families making more than $250,000 -- a proposal that will continue all of the tax cuts for 98 percent of small-business owners (and some of the tax cuts for the remaining 2 percent.)

The article also states that Obama will propose "a permanent expansion of research and development tax credits for companies and new tax breaks that would allow businesses to write off 100 percent of their new capital investments through 2011."

These proposals are unambiguously good for the vast majority of small businesses. And yet, Fox comes up with this headline:

BIG MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT SMALL BUSINESS AND TAXES

By Chye-Ching Huang and James Horney

Supporters of various tax benefits for high- income households often claim that failure to maintain them would have an undue effect on many small businesses. But even assuming a broad definition of “small business,” such claims are often exaggerated or false. This paper examines three such claims.

First, critics charge that allowing the 2001 tax cut’s reduction in the top two marginal income tax rates for individual taxpayers to expire as scheduled would affect a large proportion of small-business owners. In fact, only 1.9 percent of filers with any small-business income are projected to face either of the top two income tax rates in 2009. By contrast, more than 14 percent of filers with small-business income claim the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) for low-income workers. Thus, strengthening the EITC could help more than seven times as many small businesses as reducing the top income tax rates.

4. If the Bush tax cuts are so "magical"
that they need to be indefinitely extended (and let's not kid ourselves, that IS what the GOP wants) then they should be able to show us where all the jobs are, right? Where's the beef? They should be able to pull some numbers about how many jobs they created since 2003, right?
