Initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped 27,000 to a seasonally adjusted 451,000, the lowest since the week ended July 10, the Labor Department said on Thursday.

Analysts polled by Reuters had forecast claims dipping to 470,000 from the previously reported 472,000 the prior week, which was revised up to 478,000 in Thursday's report.

1. Good news, but the trend never seems to last
As soon as we get close to the 425,000 mark, we seem to get ass kicked in the other direction once again.

2. census layoffs were skewing the numbers...
.... which is not to say that REAL people weren't being affected, but jobless claims were trending down until the census' hirings ended.

Today's numbers put us BACK to where we were before that began.
