Rand Paul afraid to stand on same stage as Jack Conway--backs out
St. John picnic officials are disappointed Republican U.S. Senate candidate Rand Paul won’t speak at Saturday’s picnic.

Picnic organizers felt they had a firm commitment that he’d be on the podium at 4 p.m. and promoted his appearance with Democrat Jack Conway.

“We got a call Wednesday night from his campaign saying he’d be at the picnic from 12 to 1 shaking hands, but he couldn’t be there at 4,” said Adrian Roof, chairman of the political speaking. “They wanted to know if he could speak at 1. We told them that wouldn’t work.”

1. Maybe Paul has to work on his hair.
He looks like some kind of deranged poodle. ;)

4. I have a theory that says this season GOP is avoiding debates and meetings like this...
... after the Citizens United ruling!

I'm hoping that some news agency is doing more thorough research on this and is analyzing all of the races to see trends.

The ones I've been watching, it seems like the Republican is avoiding or trying to control any kind of event where they are being asked to attend with the Democrat like a debate.

In the past, they may have felt the need to do this to keep up enough visibility to be in the race. Now with the no holds barred campaign spending that's allowed without McCain-Feingold in place, so many of these Rethugs know that they're probably a lot better off just flooding the airwaves with their ads instead of participating in a "risky" debate.

I hope that some news organization is really looking in to this. Because I think if true, it needs to be made visible to the public, as perhaps an added collective challenge to overcome the ad onslaught we have right now.

Dudley's been avoiding a debate with Kitzhaber here in Oregon. Whitman at least earlier was trying to avoid/control any debate with Jerry Brown. And I'm sure there are many more. And candidates like Sharron Angle and Jan Brewer are avoiding press contact.

11. I agree. I've already posted a couple of times about
their success with the tactic first unleashed by Palin in the VP debates of just not answering any question they don't want to - this has morphed into the latest tactic of running from reporters and ducking debates with the opposition. They've determined that they can play one-way communication all the way to Election Day and not pay any price for it. The sad part is that it appears that they're right.

7. Makes sense -
you can't be embarrassed by something that was never caught on tape and put before the public.

Hiding is the only tactic they have left.

9. Maybe he has a date with Sharron Angle.
Sharron Angle cancels debate, infuriates reporter

Sharron Angle's last-minute decision to pull out of a planned debate has angered long-time Nevada political journalist Jon Ralston.

"Earlier today, Sharron Angle's campaign agreed to accept our invitation to debate Harry Reid on 'Face to Face' in an hour-long live broadcast from Reno on October 21st. Within hours of Reid accepting, Angle's campaign called to say, well, it's backing out now," Ralston said on the local news show "Face to Face" Thursday. He then played a clip of Angle saying she would like to have a debate on the show with Reid.
