Reid will push for a 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell' vote next week
The Washington Blade has learned that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) intends to schedule a vote next week on major defense budget legislation that contains “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” repeal language, regardless of any objection from members of the U.S. Senate.

A senior Democratic leadership aide, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said Reid met with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) on Monday to inform the Republican leader that the fiscal year 2011 defense authorization bill will come to the Senate floor the week of Sept. 20.

The aide said Senate leadership is anticipating the Senate won’t have unanimous consent to bring the legislation to the floor, so 60 votes will be necessary to end a filibuster and move forward with debate on the bill.

So will Republicans block this just before an election?

1. Good luck with that
Having such a vote only several weeks before an election is bound to produce some disappointment when Democratic votes (especially from red or purple areas) are counted.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for Harry's intention, it's just that I question his timing.

5. Yes, but there will be votes
to amend it. Expect the Repukes to put up something about keeping DADT, and be prepared to recoil as Blue Dogs and Democratic congresscritters in red and purple states go along with it, just before an election.

16. Amendments need 60 votes. No way in Homophobic Hell will the GOP get there.

Is there any move by the Democratic leadership you do approve of? Just curious.

Yesterday, you thought President Obama's desire to take up immigration reform was a bad idea, too. :eyes:

7. Just before a heated midterm battle is not the right time
It's a divisive issue with some and we cannot afford to lose a single vote. The psychotic right has whipped their sheeple into a frenzy and you know they will ALL be at the polls. We need to do our duty to this nation and GET OUT AND VOTE.

9. I understand your advocacy but society doesn't spin on a dime like that
We are seeing the pendulum swing back and forth on Gay Marriage/Gay Rights and DADT falls into that move as well. But I see more steps forward than backward on it. It's just going to take time for enough momentum to build, then the national politicians will have to vote for it. For right now we need to concentrate on getting more states to get on board.

I voted for Obama based on (in no particular order) DADT, closing Guantanamo, and ending corporate abuses. I'm still waiting on all of those.

12. Don't you agree we're making progress
Can you imaging having this many states legalize gay marriage or at least to recognize one performed in another state. That is an amazing achievement. We're not done yet. It just has to be a state by state effort for now. And before you know it the feds will have no choice but to enact it into law. It's the right thing to do but politicians are cowards above all else.

13. Almost every time...
Edited on Thu Sep-16-10 07:04 PM by awoke_in_2003
one party has controlled both houses and the White House, in the off year elections they lose one of the houses. The time is now. Of course, it could all be part of the plan- don't get it passed while you are in control, then when the other party gains control claim you can't do anything because you don't have the power. The dems don't want to repeal DOMA or DADT- so they will just scapegoat the republicans, who seem to be the only party that can get shit rammed through without filibuster proof majorities. Our leadership is pathetic and weak.

14. Didn't happen to FDR
We needed an FDR but we got a center-right Republican in Democratic clothing. Too bad for us.

But we're not going to lose either the House or the Senate because we're going to get energized and get out and VOTE. We're all going to put it in "D" and show the rich that the "lower class" 97% of us are not going to stand for their theft and lies any longer.

the rich run this country- the scene in DC is a sideshow. 99% of the politicians are bought and paid for.

20. I'm glad Harry Reid is the Senate Majority Leader and not you.
Courage is bold. People respond to boldness.

DADT is unpopular with the American People.

19. Compare this to President Bush and the GOP calling to amend the Constitution against GLBT Americans.
This is bold to do right before the election as is Reid's calling for the Dream Act.
