Dodd: Congress Could Defund Consumer Bureau Over Warren Interim Appointment
Outgoing Senator Chris Dodd (D-Conn.) warned Tuesday that an interim appointment of Elizabeth Warren to head the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau "jeopardizes the existence" of the nascent agency.

"I'm not enthusiastic about that and I think it'll be met with a lot of opposition," Dodd told reporters after coming off the Senate floor.

Dodd said that an interim appointment would deprive the director of the legitimacy that comes with Senate confirmation. He added that such an appointment could create a backlash that would lead Congress to defund the bureau.

2. This is the shit Obama has to deal with - not just the Republicans but a segment of the Dems that
act like this. It reminds me of the 5 or so Dems that are already sticking up for extending the tax cuts for the rich.

9. Do you think that they can get 60 votes between the 41
republicans and all of 19 of the Democrats. Nelson is full of crap and it is a shame that he can't be kicked out. What's the difference between him and a republican.

14. HuffPo may be trying to stir up shit. Last week, Dodd declared his support for Elizabeth Warren.
Edited on Tue Sep-14-10 03:13 PM by ClarkUSA
I just got off the phone with his DC office, spoke very politely to them, and told them that the reaction to his statement was not good and perhaps he might do well to walk it back, that we didn't need to help the GOP question Elizabeth Warren's "legitimacy" nor did the party need anymore friendly fire before the midterms. The nice guy on the phone said he would communicate our concerns to the Senator.

It sounds to me that Dodd may have spoken off-the-cuff and HuffPo edited out the juiciest bits to drive traffic to their website, which is Arianna's media whore MO these days.

I doubt that the Senator is trying to torpedo the nomination of a woman that he supports for the job. He, like many elderly pols (see Bill Clinton, probably doesn't realize that his words would have unintended consequences in the hyperkinetic blogosphere.

16. He doesn't. Dodd came out in support of her nomination just last week.
HuffPo is stirring up shit. Notice all the edited quotes? I just spoke to his DC office and let them know and they're going to speak with Dodd about it. I suggested talking less, walking the rhetoric back, and not giving HuffPo or the Republicans ammunition.

17. Face it - he doesn't want her in
or else he wouldn't be raising all these hypothetical bullshit arguments. He'd keep his mouth shut and stop talking so earnestly to the press.

18. You're jumping to quite a conclusion based on HuffPo's usual Democratic shit-stirring...
Edited on Tue Sep-14-10 08:44 PM by ClarkUSA
... considering Senator Dodd came out publicly to support her candidacy last week.

I suspect his Senator's ego got pricked at the thought of the WH running an end game around the Senate using a clause he created and he mouthed off without thinking twice about it.

After my chat with Dodd's DC office aide today, I doubt the Senator from CT will be protesting further. At least I hope so. :)

20. I don't understand the hostility here, Dodd is making a prediction not a threat.
Appointing an interim director with no intention of ever seeking Senate confirmation would likely elicit the type
of response Dodd describes.

Don't shoot the messenger.

22. Dodd is my Senator and he has done some good things over the years but it is time for him to go.
And hopefully Blumenthal will win and be a much better Senator. Chris has just been there too long. I don't think he dislikes Warren but he thinks she might be controversial....to which I say so what. Not guts anymore, Chris. What happened over the last 20 or so years to you?
