But I could be wrong on that.
Or maybe a college campus, although there are a few people, I would guess mirror internet site, since watching the 'posting' shows that the posts here are not based on reality.
That does not change that I am still due beer and travel money, and many good experiences.
And really there could be posters from many places here, the point is how would you know...

154. This is a great site but |
|
I wonder can we decipher who are the 'real troublemakers.' For example, I think it is great that people here have long debates about the lack of progress on healthcare reform. Obama did a great job despite the poor performance by the Senate.
However, I feel that some people latch onto right wing talking points.

feature. It has turned into a way to express pleasure or displeasure with the person who posts much of the time.
By the way, I unrec'd this OP, because it is just another divisive meme. The site is littered with complaint posts and it is getting a bit much. A post like this has no business being on the "best" page. It has no relevant content.

122. I agree. I have no problem with the unrec feature, and I use it |
|
where I see fit. I am simply saying that no matter what the content of an OP, every OP seems to get at least a couple unrecs, and usually as soon as it is posted. At least half the time that I try to rec something very quickly after it is posted, it stays at 0, indicating someone unrec'd it before I rec'd it. And this goes for posts that are not at all divisive too, such as donating to a food bank.
I think it is the people who hate unrec and complain about it all the time. I think they try to over use it to make a point and try to get other people ticked off about unrec too.

They seem to think if they unrec everything, somehow people will confuse that with censorship or some such nonsense, and make them do away with the feature. I doubt it has anything to do with Democrats winning.

Wanting to extend the tax cuts all the way up to 500K a year? Maybe Democrats have a little trouble winning these days because of out-of-touch ideas like that one. Sayin'! On edit: here's the thread: http://upload.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=433x441875Maybe if Democrats stop being so solicitous to the interests of the top 2% and worried more about the bottom 98% we'd do a little better.

Except for now. Aside from the moral aspects of helping the rich get richer, kissing the butt of 2% of the population (less than that, when you consider the Kennedy's and the Kerry's of this country who pay their taxes AND vote Democratic) at the expense of the other 98% is just bad politics.

Perhpas I speak for myself when I say that I don't give a damn if Dems win -IF THEY DON'T ACT LIKE DEMS!
I'm tired of the administration insulting libs, then hearing from some here at DU that there is no room to question or criticize, and if we do we're turncoats.
In the end, is it more Progressive to question groupthink, or to give in and get in line? If no one check our moral compass, we'll navigate ourselves off the damn map. Blame whomever you like if we suffer losses this year, because those you blame know that an enthusiastic voting base is developed when officials uphold the promises they make during campaign season.
And if thye don't, you'll blame US?

...or governing, or policy. Not today. Not in this country, not now.
Politics is about me, my self-expression, and my social signaling to friends and neighbors, via the choices I make in consumer products candidates, just how I feel about the world, and about me.
You'd think DU'd be different, but you'd be wrong.
Hell, if I could only go down to the town clerk's office and register as "Hollister" instead of "Democrat", I'd do it during my lunch hour tomorrow.

It's a gang mentality from a large band of like-minded disrupters. Though their individual agendas may differ they all falsely proclaim their negativity stems from progressive ideals.
If you support the Democrats and really want them to win this year you are very much in the majority. This was proven when a poll was posted asking who is voting for Democrats this year. It came out overwhelmingly on the Vote for Dems side. But then anti-Dem crowd act in complete unison to unrec positive posts about Obama, the Dems or the Dems winning.
It's ironic how they are the ones who coined the buzz phrase "lock step"
An important note - I am not saying everyone who's critical of Obama is one of them.

56. Big deal--really. What does UnRec have to do with the truth or the validity of a thread? |
|
There is way too much obsessing here at DU about the whole Rec/UnRec thing. Yes, how dare anyone UnRec one of my threads or one with which I agree. It's like junior high school because many a well written or thoughtful thread will get few Recs yet there are those here who can just say "hi" and DUers will fall all over themselves to Rec the OP, declaring how deep and insightful it is.
As I said, the truth or validity of a thread as well as its value is not measured by its popularity although way too many here appear to believe that is the case.
Also, I don't believe that every post that promotes winning for Democrats gets unrecommended. Hyperbole.

|
sorry but there is no stealth troll horde of freeper unrec zombies. Worthy posts, those with a +5 rec to unrec count, make it to the super fantastic excellent place of honor greatest page, proof that the OP is a saint, others don't, as the OP is a miserable shit who cannot write a sentence worth reading.
Meanwhile we still have deep divisions on this board, as you are well aware, between cheerleaders for the D team, and ideological leftists who actually want the Democratic Party to stand for and fight for a progressive center-left agenda. That split is very real, and extends well beyond this message board, and is quite serious, unlike the voting system for the 'greatest page' on a message board.

69. Lots of hardcore Dems don't feel welcome here anymore. I know some.. |
|
of them personally. When I log onto a site called "(D)emocratic Underground", and the front page looks like something lifted off of Free Republic, that's a problem. Faced with the choice, that we all have, some good hardcore Dems have opted for sites that are more "Dem" friendly.
Part of the problem is, in the aftermath of Bush II, DU's mission has become somewhat murky. Skinner, whom I believe is a genuinely nice guy, has provided cover, masked as "constructive criticism", to forces that do nothing but attack Democrats, and especially this White House. If taken seriously, over time, it can have a huge demoralizing impact on patrons here. As a lifelong Dem myself, I find this pattern troubling. I want the DU that I found all those years ago.
It's amazing that the site that brought me so much comfort in those dark years after the Bush appointment, has now turned out to be the source of such consternation. A friend and fellow Democrat turned me on to DU. I've recently had to ask myself if I would recommend DU to my friends & family, and sadly the answer is an unqualified "NO".
PROUD DEMOCRAT FOR LIFE! :dem:

You know what's even worse than being beaten down here day after day? It's the utterly predictable bashing. It's so predictable it's outright boring. Who wants to come here every day and refute the same bullshit, day in day out?
For example, before Obama appointed Warren I predicted EXACTLY what the attacks would be. So when those attacks happened, it was a huge snooze fest. Those attacks came in lockstep, practically word for word.
Heh. And they say WE are the message discipline people.

Anyway, after I read that thread I made some calls for my senate candidate and then went on a very long hike in the foothills, drank 1 too many energy drinks, came home and collapsed in front of a stupid Lifetime movie - that I had already seen. Anything but read that crazy shit here.

we would all sit around and cheer as we did NOT get real health care reform? Cheer about escalating a pointless, COSTLY war? Cheer that gays still don't have equal rights?
I mean I support when Obama does good things like saying the rich will NOT get to keep these crazy Bush tax cuts. But I will ALWAYS question power and those in power regardless of which of the two major corporately funded parties has put them into office. To do otherwise would be... UnAmerican. :patriot:
Doesn't mean I'm going to vote Republicans or anything. Some of us just want a stronger, more progressive party.

|
I love it when you guys claim to be "the base". Polling always indicates otherwise. Loud noises on the internet, do not "a base" make. FWIW, "true progressives" have let the party down before(circa 2000). The most loyal Democratic constituencies are always there in a pinch, because we know the alternative is just too gruesome.
No one has been able to successfully convince me that the constant backbiting by the "true progressives" has accomplished anything other than spoiling elections, and giving Repubs an edge. If there were any great desire for these ideological "true progressive" positions, why are they seemingly so impotent at actually getting elected? And what's more, why can't they successfully argue to the American people, and their colleagues in the Congress, that their ideas are better? If you feel unrepresented, then perhaps it's time to throw that hat in the ring, and see where it takes you?;-)
If you can't get a significant coalition of "the base" behind you, then your ideas aren't worth the paper towel they're written on. Just ask Dennis Kucinich, who has been rejected time & time again. There are leftists ("true progressives"), and then there's the real Democratic base. I'm a loyal Democrat, win or lose. Which are you?

Because I'm too busy in real life trying to win an election, not whine and lose an election.
These days, DU is too "helpful" to the GOP, as the Vichy Gov in France was to the Germans. My mother lived through that era, and she has nothing good to say about Vichy and those who participated.

I mean, stuff that's real important - not just a one sentence post in GD:P complaining about un-recs that somehow ends up with 50 recs. So no, I don't think you have to worry. The GD:P crowd will ALWAYS rec a pro-Obama thread. And then usually complain about unrecs.

133. Yes, we seem to be a rapidly dwindling group here ... |
|
... meaning "us" - those who still support the Party and this Administration.
I used to "live" here at DU - of late, I hardly check in.
If I wanted to know what Huffington Post or John Aravosis have to say on any given topic, I can go directly to the source. And if I wanted to see what Freepers have to say, I can go to their site.
What I have noticed of late on DU is that positive threads about Obama or the Party are often rec'd, but with few replies - as though those who support Dems and the Democratic prez don't want to be identified as doing so.
I've also noted that "heads-up" threads (i.e. "Obama speaking at eight o'clock tonight") get an abundance of unrecs - and one wonders at the motivation there. Are there people here who actually fear fellow DUers hearing what he has to say? And is that because what he does have to say often destroys the predictions/ preconceived notions of the nay-sayers?
Things that make you go hmmmmm ...

I don't participate in the recommend process and seldom notice the numbers.
This is the first cycle since DU's existence that the political landscape is severely titled against us, so naturally the participation will decline. It's no different than the message board of a football team late in a very poor season. Only the true fanatics are on board, dissecting the latest waiver wire pickup. I'll glance but seldom participate, and I find that holding true on DU this year. Little energy, certainly not the typical zest to analyze each race and its unique variables. I barely know the names.
In 2002 we had expectation, even favoritism, before it fell apart late. This cycle is a guaranteed avalanche, merely a question of where it stops.
I know I'll be ripped by enthusiasts who say it's not over, not even a certainty we'll lose seats. That type lacks good handicapping instincts and doesn't grasp the math. I applaud them but don't have interest in a pointless debate. I hope they're correct, despite the odds, in the hundreds of millions. Occasionally I see a post from someone I respect a great deal, like tritsofme. Keep it up. In 2012 the fairway will be wider, and not uphill.

When the going gets tough, the left bails. Thus the pitiful tone of so many posts these days.

159. This site has been overrun by Freeper disruptors here since Obama was elected. |
|
And they love the un recommend function. Notice Freeperville has no similar user driven interface?
I've pointed out several times that Freepers have come here pretending to be disaffected progressives. I've gone so far as questioning the very meaning of the word progressive in modern US politics. I have been flamed and had posts deleted, threads I've participated in locked and accused of disruption. For what?
Saying the obvious. This forum has been infiltrated by FReepers and their minions

167. It seems that as we near election day, the anti-Dem rhetoric grows louder. |
|
Anti-Dem, anti-Obama, shoot-ourselves-in-the-head type whackiness.
Recommended and thanks for pointing this out.

168. It's just an echo chamber now for the anti-Dems. |

The place is good for a hysterically funny quote or two.
