It's only because so many other politicians have become conservative weasels that he seems "radical" to some today.

It is one of those great moments in Americana in which one person can't describe he major tenets of socialism, other than it is supposed to be bad just because?

If that is the case, I think your nick and avatar are doubleplus ironic.

He is not a member of any socialist party or the Democratic party. In the legislature, he is effectively a Democrat. Senators are members of their state parties. Al Franken, for instance, was elected as the candidate for the Democratic-Farmer-Labor party, but is considered a Democrat.

Funny, I am seeing all the same so-called "progressives" who get a "pragmatist" hard on when it comes to justify conservative policies by the Dems... become nastily "partisan" when dealing with real "progressives" like Sanders or Kucinich.

I am starting to believe that "pragmatist" is now code for "too chickensh*t for the conservative moniker now that the brand has been soiled beyond repair."

which is not a party affiliation. He appears on the ballot as an "Independent" (with a capital 'I'), and he caucuses with the Democrats.

In fact, seeing that you oppose someone who caucuses with the Democrats, maybe it's you who's "supporting the wrong party."

I believe the spirit of the op is to honor Senator Sanders commitment to the people of this country, rather than serving wealth and the powerful.

Give Thom Hartmann's radio show a listen, especially the first hour on every Friday. Bernie Sanders comes on and takes questions. Then you'll know what I am talking about.

You're basically trying to paint me as some sort of blind "hater". That's completely not the case. When Obama does something good, I praise him. When he does something terrible, I criticize him.

And when he does something that we should expect from even the most milquetoast, center-right shade of a faux-Democrat (e.g. embryonic stem-cell research, equal pay for women, weak-ass handwaving about rights for gay couples), I ignore it.

86. Once again, it's "generally support Dems", not "unconditionally support the president"
Dennis Kucinich, Howard Dean, Barbara Lee, Russ Feingold, Alan Grayson, Al Franken, etc, etc, etc. I support many Democrats. When they support us.

You generally DON'T support him.

105. No, it's not.
Obama is the DEM. president. We didn't HAVE a Dem. president when the rulesfor DU were written.

109. Thanks for the link. I got some valuable information from it...
Mainly THIS line: "But insults, name-calling, or other expressions of contempt toward Barack Obama or his supporters are not welcome." I would think that includes calling someone a "cheerleader." ;)

111. Fair point.
As long as you acknowledge the fact that any and all substantive criticism of Obama is part of what this site is about. And there is no minimum of "nice" posts required.

101. he's not a capital "S" socialist, but just a socialist.
He is a member of no party (including any Socialist party) but caucuses with the Democrats and in his state's elections is effectively the Democratic candidate. Get your facts straight before you try to correct others.

113. do you not get the distinction between "Socialist" and "socialist"?!
One cannot be a self-described proper noun. For instance, a furry brown fellow at a zoo may well be a bear, a stuffed toy may be a bear, etc. None of them, however, are Bears, because that would make them members of an NFL team.

12. He has courage
There are many people in this country who have been seriously hurt and disabled from exposures to toxic chemicals. The "system" is adept at labeling these people "crazy" and then dumping them so they end up not getting medical care and many times must turn to SSI to even live. Corporations are not held liable, insurance companies do not have to pay, employers just dump the injured workers and eveything goes on except the injured person loses everything.
Bernie Sanders has read into the public record how these people are treated and who is getting away with murder. No other politician I know of has stood up for these people/us. I will love him forever because he did.

22. Amen...Amen....Amen
Bernie is the greatest.

And the sad thing is that he is real popular with voters in his state...Including those who would not be considered "liberals" or "progressives."

They like him because he is straight, and they know he is fighting for their interests.

If only the democrats would learn from him.

90. I consider him a moderate progressive, which is my favorite part of the political spectrum BTW
a lot of the "progressives" in this site would probably faint if they were to face real progressive parties and their platforms in other industrialized democracies.

What passes for "far left" in this forum (Sanders, Kucinich, et al), would be probably considered off-center left in pretty much elsewhere in the world. It is frightening how much to the right the political discourse in this country has been co-opted.
