Jimmy Carter Gets Fox News
Posted by: Mark @ 6:35 pm

Appearing on the NBC Nightly News, former Pres. Jimmy Carter demonstrated that he still has keen insight into the state of modern media:

Brian Williams: How do you think it came to be that such high numbers of people believe that this American-born Christian President is either foreign born or a Muslim or both?

Pres. Carter: I think the number one factor is Fox News. It’s totally distorting everything possible concerning the facts. And I think their constant hammering away at these false premises about our incumbent President has a major impact on the consciousness of America. A lot of well-meaning people, including many of those in the Tea Party movement, believe what is said in this constant hammering away by Glenn Beck and by others who have no regards for the truth.

I have nothing to add.

61. President Carter was one of the most humble God fearing, loving, intellectual presidents we've had,
and isn't it horribly sad, that those supposed "bible believers" in the teabagger movement think of him as the worst (remembering they don't acknowledge Obama as president)?

Talk about insane dichotomy.

Jimmy Carter was a wonderful humane president, and it's so sad that their false cowboys, Reagan & Bush, could be so revered for such asinine reasons...

when Jimmy left WHouse, the natdebt was a reasonable $1 trillion...regan doubled it , bush doubled again, clinton held the line, then junyer gave the keys to the store to the pigs...we're bankrupt forever...just like reagan wanted us to be (btw, they name hospitals after reagan...lol)

91. Actually that's wrong, we reached $1 trillion in debt under Reagan, not Carter
Edited on Tue Sep-21-10 09:04 PM by ShadowLiberal
I know that we reached $1 trillion in debt under Reagan because I remember reading about it in my high school history book, and how all Reagan did about it was just make a speech going 'oh it's so horrible that we have so much debt'.

Also there's one thing Carter missed in his statement, he forgot to call Fox News a propaganda organization, because that's what they are. Democrats should start calling it a propaganda organization, if everyone starts doing it like Fox does with the Muslim rumors and stuff then Fox's credibility will take a huge hit.

22. Obama suggests Fox News is like 'talk radio'
snip

"I think what our advisers have simply said is that we are going to take media as it comes," Obama told NBC's Savannah Guthrie. "And if media is operating basically as a talk radio format then that's one thing, and if it's operating as a news outlet that's another. But it's not something I'm losing sleep over."

White House Senior Adviser David Axelrod said this weekend that Fox is "not really a news station." That echoes similar comments made by White House Communications Director Anita Dunn and White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel.

51. Then WHY
do they have a front row seat in the press room??? I've been told that the admin does not have a say about who gets which seat in the press room; however, I believe they could state that ONLY legitimate news agencies will be seated. If faux gets a seat, then Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert should get seats as well.

Then, here's something else to think about, how about after 8 years of Carter we had 8 years of Gore - just think about how much better off we'd be without 9/11, either Iraqui war, no mega tax cuts for the rich, no giving all that money to oil companies for nothing, all the growth from a green economy, no paying companies to relocate their jobs offshore, they'd have to pay the same tax rate or even more to do that so wouldn't, no government contracts to convicted scumbag companies like Haliburton, probably an Israli/Palistinian peace treaty, so many things wrong with us would have never happened if we had these 2 men as president for 8 years.

Instead we had the incompetent Repug traitors

46. Perhaps if we can ever get a progressive majority on SCOTUS, Jane Akre & Steve Wilson could appeal?

Don't know if the statue of limitations/deadlines have run out to do an appeal on the Monsanto case.

If it has, then perhaps they could continue to challenge WTVT's license based on this false "we can lie if we want to" premise, and if that can be brought to court, a new test for the legal "right" to lie by Fox News can be put before the courts. Obviously based on corporate personhood's "right" to lie, and perhaps in one fell swoop a new SCOTUS majority could also strike down the total BS Corporate Personhood "interpretation" that has lead to Citizen's United and other crappy rulings.

66. In Canada Harper's party wants to put up FOX NEWS NORTH
and he wants us Canadians to pay for it.....

NEVER..!!!!!!
.80,000 of us signed a petition refusing to be forced to pay for "Fox News North" (aka SunTV) on our cable bills, the Sun media empire threw everything they had at us - smear pieces in their newspapers, threatened lawsuits, and SunTV frontman Kory Teneycke even admitted insider knowledge of a criminal sabotage of our petition!

All DU Canadians should sign it too.

67. OPEC
Jimmy Carter broke the back of OPEC with his energy initiatives. That brought oil down from $40 a barrel to eventually $10 a barrel. That is why so many people hate him---he's bad for the oil industry profiteers who had a good thing going when the US was on its knees from high oil prices.

I'll say it again...
If we had listen to President Carter back then we wouldn't be in the mess we're in - not only Iraq but, so much more.

President Jimmy - you were right!

73. yeah but i still hate what he said in the 60 minutes interview.
when they talked about there was no war, no shots fired, no missile shot off. He said it was his religion. He should have said it was the right thing to do, it was the smart thing to do. Not that it was his religion!!!! This can bite us in the butt. And it also kind of ignores the attempted rescue of the hostages in Iran.

We used to share a religion and we both walked away from it for the same reason. There is little with him that I disagree with. May he continue to live well.

96. If access to information is vital for the survival of democracy, then Fox is treasonous....
Willfully and knowingly providing false information on a routine basis for the premise of propping up one political view over all others is counter to the concept behind the 'free press' clause of the 1st Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

Or have I gotten something wrong with this analysis?

Jimmy Carter is, after Barack Obama, the President most unfairly maligned by Republicans (if ever they fairly maligned a Democrat, which I'm pretty sure never has happened).

If you believe in Hell, then a special place must be reserved for those who've trash-talked Carter.

103. It was Howard Dean
who was the first public figure to peg Pox News as the propaganda arm of the Republican Party. Everything Murdoch does is to advance the pro corporation Republican agenda.
Actually, Murdoch should be stripped of his citizenship and deported. Simply put, he's a fucking traitor.
When Sarah Palin advises Christine O'Donnell to speak through Pox News it says they're not even hiding the fact that Pox is a 24/7 Republican campaign ad. The place really needs to be shuttered.
That their viewers take Glenn Beck seriously speaks volumes.
They are a big part of why the Citizens United decision made corporations people. It was Pox that first called the 2000 election for Bush. This gave the corporate slugs the cover they needed to report the same tripe. And as we know, it was the worst leader since Caligula who appointed the far right Justices Alito and Roberts who tilted the balance of the court to the extreme right.
Thanks Pox News and Rupert the Pirate for killing democracy and the truth.

106. Howard tolerates Chris Wallace, disdains the rest of them
Howard was head of the Democratic Party. He knows as well as anyone what's news and what's partisan propaganda.

Of course, Fox Noise never made a serious effort to disguise its purpose in the first place. Only idiots swallow
the "fair and balanced" line, and these people are the same ones who believe slogans like "you're in good hands
with Allstate," or that "Nationwide is one your side." But as a political propaganda organization, it should
register as such, and be subject to federal regulation as such. Since corporations are people these days, it
should also be subject to penalties for crimes such as incitement to riot, RICO act violations, and conspiracy
to commit murder (such as in Kansas).

107. "Murdoch should be stripped of his citizenship and deported."
I couldn't agree more, but I don't hold out any hope of that occurring. Besides the damage has already been done. Another right-wing billionaire could/would just take his place.

I vividly remember when Rupert Murdoch first purchased the New York Post. There were dire warnings from serious journalists and commentators that he would cheapen and demean that newspaper.

It was also predicted that Murdoch's brand of so-called journalism would adversely affect the entire profession in America. Clearly that has occurred.

Fox News Channel is obviously an aberration, but nonetheless, it continues to have a detrimental effect on the other cable news outlets.

What he is doing (or is allowing to be done by Roger Ailes) is a threat to our democracy, and I truly believe that.
