Jimmy Carter's diary: JC on Kucinich, Ali, Jesse Jackson, Walter Cronkite & others
Dennis Kucinich (entry: January 25, 1978): "Mayor Dennis Kucinich came by from Cleveland. He's young, a supporter of mine, and a highly visible, very innovative young man."

Newsweek (entry: August 15, 1978): "I had a one-hour Newsweek interview, which was a waste of time. Ninety percent of their questions involved public opinion polls."

Dan Rather (entry: August 8, 1980): "He sent word to me secretly by Jody that he was not going to ask negative questions but try to restore his image to be more as Walter Cronkite and not as a frivolous, slashing interviewer."

Burt Reynolds (entry: June 3, 1980): " Burt Reynolds came by to offer his support for me politically, and to help us with our energy conservation effort. He's quite interested in Lake Tahoe and was pleased at the steps we've taken to protect the quality of life there."

Muhammad Ali (entry: September 15, 1978): "We then watched the heavyweight fight and enjoyed it. We put in a call for Muhammad Ali and finally talked to him about 1:30 a.m. He said he was going to keep the championship for six months and then retire. I talked to his ten-year-old daughter and invited her to visit Amy. Ali was excited to know that Sadat and I had watched the fight."

Bob Hope (entry May 23, 1978): "We had a reception for the USO with Bob Hope as guest of honor. Hope made a lot of jokes about being a Republican comedian. I teased him about how much time he'd spent in the White House, that Amy had invited him to spend the night with us and hoped that he could climb up the tree to get to his bedroom, and so forth. It was pleasant."

Rev. Jesse Jackson (entry: September 8, 1980): "Jesse Jackson came by and said he wants to endorse me. I look on this with some doubt, because he generally makes his living criticizing people, not supporting them."

Walter Cronkite (entry August 8, 1978): "Cronkite is really a fine gentleman, one of my favorite people, my favorite news person."

1. Jimmy must be getting ready for his exit
Why else would he be so open as of late? Maybe with #86 coming up, he doesn't feel he has to hold back.

2. He looked exhausted when he was on Jon Stewart
last night. He wasn't his perky Jimmy Carter self.

3. He looked tired on 60 minutes too..but I'd imagine I'd be pretty tired too if I lived his life...
...I am looking forward to reading this book, I don't think that he pulls any punches about his time in office..

5. I didn't see that.

To me he looked amazing; and was more in-the-moment and quick witted wrt back and forth with John Stewart than most guest half his age.
