3. I heard Lincoln as a no.
Also, doesn't Harry Reid have to vote no in order to bring it up again? I may be wrong on that one.

23. I'm trembling with anger right now.
And the discharges of good people in our military, who want to serve their country, openly, like 25 other countries do, goes on...and on...and on...and on....and on...and on...and on...and on...and on.

This is an awful day today. And I don't want to fucking hear how this is entirely the fault of the Republicans. There's more than enough blame for this clusterfuck right now.

34. I think it was the Dream Act amendment for it that many voted against
McConnell offered a consent agreement if it were not brought up - and possibly other conditions.

Here is McConnell:
http://www.c-spanvideo.org/videoLibrary/clip.php?appid=598823692
Note he says nothing related to immigration should be in the first 20 amendments.

Here is Reid rejecting it:

http://www.c-spanvideo.org/videoLibrary/clip.php?appid=598823696

What seems key is that McConnell does not want a vote on the Dream Act before the election. Reid wants it. What is clear is that a vote against the Dream Act would hurt many Republicans.

38. This is more or less to your subthread here: Try to catch Rachel Maddow tonight...
I regret I'm not going to be home when her show airs, but I caught her commenting on the vote immediately after it came down today.

You know she'll be good tonight -- righteous anger coupled with solid analysis. In the bit I caught she was already in analytical mode, and the bottom line is this: McCain and them are the past; the audience at Lady GaGa's speech is the future; the Repubs are trading short-term gain for long-term viability with the rising generation. Oddly enough, she sounded almost cheerful.

Personally I think the Repubs are going to have to cave on this in order to get the bill passed. In the meantime, we Dems should be doing everything in our power to Get Out the Youth Vote, now and forever more.

98% of Dems voted for the bill. 100% of the Repubs voted against it. Who ya gonna call your friend?

Hekate

24. Interestingly, I just got in the mail today a package from the VFW
Why, I have no idea. At any rate, it is a set of Christmas cards, labels, wrapping paper, and ribbon, with the inevitable donation sheet and return envelope included.

I am going to send the donation sheet back to them (so they'll have to pay the postage, aside from the cost of the cards). It will state that until they stop opposing the repeal of DADT, they will receive no donation from me. And, oh yeah, I'll donate the greeting cards, etc. to the local VA hospital, so that real vets--some of them surely gay vets--can use them to contact family and friends.

That's not the Democrats selling us out--that's the 60-40 system being borked.

35. There are 59 Democrats and 57 are for this
(Reid's vote is procedural because it lets him bring it up again.)

It is clear that there is a lot of game playing here - the Republicans do not want a vote on the Dream Act before the election. There is sufficient support for the that amendment. What is clear is that they are 3 votes short - and not one Republican voted for it. So, what will your party do with a subset of the current Democrats. They will need 60 votes - which means that they will need the people left in the Democratic party and a few Republicans.

How many of the current Democrats would you accept in your new party?
