First, in a Democracy, we must always remember that words do matter, but that our actions speak louder than any words might. And our decisive actions spring from the courage of our convictions.
Second, no battle is ever lost when true grit, tenacity and devotion to a just cause still exists. And every battle – whether using bullets, bayonets or, most preferably, ballots – can turn on chance, the will of a single individual, or the infectious courage of a real leader. And that real leader can be a man or woman caught up in the fierce frenzy of the moment.
Third, in the aftermath of battle, particularly a political battle like the one we now fight, honor and respect is due to those whose valor does not produce victory. Partisanship has its place, but so does partnership. So does patriotism – a love of this country and all its peoples. And in these troubling times, we must be willing to find ways to work together in order to rebuild our country, to put all Americans back to work.
