KY-Sen: Jack Conway closing in on Rand Paul

KY-Sen: Jack Conway closing in on Rand Paul

by Jed Lewison

On the heels of Rand Paul's potentially game-changing gaffe about making seniors pay more for Medicare comes this new poll:

Republican Rand Paul has just a three-point lead in the Kentucky Senate race, taking 45 percent of the vote to Democratic state Attorney General Jack Conway’s 42 percent in a poll commissioned by the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee. The DSCC survey, conducted by the Benenson Strategy Group, shows Paul with almost evenly split favorability numbers: 44 percent of voters said they had a favorable impression of him, compared with 40 percent who said their impression was unfavorable. For Conway, those numbers were more positive: 43 percent favorable, 29 percent unfavorable.

As you can see, Rand Paul has a more clearly defined image -- just 16% don't have an impression of him. Conway, meanwhile, is still not as well known -- 28% have yet to form an impression. In all likelihood, the question of who wins this race will come down to whether Conway is able to make a favorable impression with that 28% who still doesn't know him. You can help him do that by donating $5 or $10 today to his campaign. Let's win this one and turn Kentucky blue!

1. Not exactly a confidence inspiring exercise.

For the DSCC to release campaign polls that show you down.

The cheapness of the media market in KY means national Democrats shouldn't walk away, but there are much more winnable Senate races out there.

? Down 3 in an open seat race and a possible pick up?

You don't think that is winnable or worth the effort? Wow.

7. Down 3 in an internal poll doesn't mean much to me.

Internal polls that get released in fundraising letters present the sunniest possible picture.

Most independent pollsters show Conway's situation to be much worse.

Thanks for the correction.

15. It's Kentucky, home of bourbon and horrible racists.
Within 10 points is a good year for a Democrat. Within 5? That's GREAT.

16. Trying not to beat a dead horse here.
Internal polling, especially the numbers that get reported in fundraising appeals, are always going to be sunnier than reality.

That the absolute best numbers his campaign could crunch show him three points behind, does not bode well for his campaign.

5. High-profile race to keep the batshit-crazy out of the Senate
In a Bush-year in 2004, we almost got rid of Jim Bunning.

KY is Democrat country (until Presidential Elections...) :(

9. Nice! Conway needs to get out into media, so they can get to know him. The debate
could be decisive.

11. Contributed twice now.
And I will again, even though I am on UI. Conway has name recognition here, since he is our State Attorney General. The Usual Suspects have been running their crap on TV here though. Chamber of Commerce, Americans for Tax Reform (Grover's little group). Jack is not as progressive as I would like, but he has the advantage of being both competent and sane...lol. If you can spare any, please do. I haven't seen any national dem ads for him yet, so he could use the help. This is one we can pick up if we get the vote out. Thanks.
