The Reagan Dollar Bill?

Future dollars: Is it time to rebrand the buck?
Through the Dollar ReDe$ign Project, artists envision the currency of the future

The competition is modeled after a similar one held in 2005 in Switzerland. The designs submitted then by graphic artist Manuela Pfrunder will soon be incorporated into the country’s currency. The Swiss contest, however, was run by the Swiss National Bank. Smith’s contest is purely a citizens’ effort. (Smith is not even a U.S. citizen; he possesses a green card.) Although he wrote to several government agencies to ask them to join the project, he received in return only a simple “thanks, but no thanks,” in Smith’s words. Even he admits the likelihood of the U.S. Treasury’s adopting one of his contest’s designs is unlikely.

“It’s such a huge impossibility, it makes me think it could actually happen,” Smith said. “I just hold on to this hope that it could happen … It’s my dream.”

What began as a lifelong interest in paper currency and a tongue-in-cheek effort to stimulate the economy has become a personal crusade for Smith, who has taken his lumps from critics online who find the contest disrespectful or short-sighted. Some have peppered the contest website’s comment board with insults and expletives.

“It really means something to people,” Smith said. “The content and symbolism of money are deeply philosophical. I started this from an intuitive point of view and used the idea of design as a simple manifestation of that thought. But as the project gained popularity and people started criticizing it and said it’s not possible, it made me think deeper and deeper about it.”

The policy of the U.S. government is to redesign currency every seven to 10 years, but only for “security and not for aesthetic reasons,” said Lydia Washington, spokeswoman for the Bureau of Engraving and Printing, which prints currency.

11. Fifty years from now, maybe. I'm okay with our currency the way it is. I sure
as hell don't want to see Reagan on money. Had enough of that slimy coot's face plastered on everything when he was alive.

12. Not now though
When a current leader is on currency, you know it's a dictatorship.

19. No. You got it wrong. I'm not saying put Obama on there...
I like the design. I like the way it looks. Take Obama off and put another lead and you've got a fancy design for a new dollar bill.

4. I am just glad they chose the $1 dollar bill for reagun
It would be expensive toilet paper at 5, 10 or more.

Still would be pricey, just not as bad as it could be.

3. Reagan's face on a $1 would put all the toilet paper companies out of business.

7. Not true, when the American people wise up (like that's gonna happen)
and put the Federal Reserve out of business, toilet paper companies will be the number one producers of our new currency, and they will be calling it the brown back, because it will be rough and tough and wont take no shit off of anybody.

6. Maybe putting Ronnie's pic on the dollar bill would be an incentive
for the feds to withdraw the paper $1 and make everybody use $1 coins like they did in Canada. (Wish they would.)

13. Fuck no. The money is fine the way it is--the Presidents that are on it are
by-and-large the best American history has to offer.

14. Andrew Jackson? Really?
Jackson who opposed paper money? Jackson who opposed national currency? Jackson who supported slavery? Jackson who massacred Native Americans?

Oh, and by the way, they're not *all* Presidents (in case you haven't seen a Franklin bill in a while), and there's the Sacagawea coin, and we have a long history of Liberty coins as well (though we're not minting them now, AFAIK), along with other non-presidents....

I'd be fine with a small pile of Salmon Chase bills....

20. First of all, I said "by-and-large".
You wouldn't agree with me that Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Roosevelt, and Kennedy are among the best?

I concede the point about Hamilton on the $10, though.
