There's a high degree of correlation between the cost of education and the County Jails.
The more we have to spend on incarcerating folks awaiting trial and those with 3 strikes. the less counties have to spend on education. DeKalb County is furloughing teachers because our jails are way overcrowded.

County commissioners can't stomach property tax increases or "soft on crime" accusations. Guess who suffers?

1. Republicans have constantly gut & cut public education funding so they can say see it's not working
Edited on Mon Sep-27-10 03:35 PM by GreenTea
same old republican tactic to privatize everything for their corporations cut funding of programs they want to get their greedy collusive over-charging, government subsidies, corporations hands on. The same public programs they point their lying manipulative fingers at by saying that these same program they gut, dosn't work...

Just so the republicans can privatize them file bankruptcies & bailouts that the tax payers will have to pay for and wouldn't of occurred if they were funded correctly in the first place.

2. And incarcerating people for non-violent drug 'offenses'
All the money we spend locking people in cages like dangerous animals for the drugs they chose to self-medicate instead of spending that money for research, treatment and education seems to be a waste of money and human beings.
No more drug war.

3. Agree....
Someone needs to seriously look at why things that are important to everyone's future are being cut. The ones in charge need to stop wasting money on the Lohans and Hiltons of the world and become the superman the education system is looking for. Maybe to start we can cut the defense budget, bring forth all of those secret programs. Cut whatever is not up to par, like the helicopter/airplane hybrid, and put that money into education and art programs. A decline in education means a decline in our country. The founding fathers all were high educated and well versed in all subjects and thats how they made our country great. They use the wisdom and knowledge the obtained. The real crime is not someone who is using cocaine(its their bodies) its the people who are stealing away America's future.

4. i would disagree, it's the students that are the biggest problem
I've sat in on some classes of my daughter, the kids are un-believable now days. there is now way in hell i would have gotten away with some of the stuff these kids pull today and these kids are from middle class families.

i can't imagine what teachers go through that have to work in the poor neighborhoods.
