I don't want Rahm to run for Mayor of Chicago, but if he does I want him to win. . . |
|
. . .let me explain.
I know this is not going to be popular on DU but I like Rahm, I have worked with him and have good friends who served on his Congressional staff. I think he would make a great Mayor of Chicago, but I also think a couple of the other candidates mentioned would make great mayors. I have not decided whose campaign I will work on or if I will sit the Mayoral race out (Chicago DUers who know me know I don't like sitting on the sidelines and will most likely end up working for someone).
That being said I don't want Rahm to run for Mayor because the minute he announces his candidacy the national media will make this race about Obama and they will try to shape the narrative of this race which is too important to fall victim to their manipulation. Furthermore Rahm's candidacy and his performance will be viewed as a test of Obama's popularity back home.
Obama has so many reasons not to endorse Rahm or anyone in this race and I hope he stays out of it.
Knowing the way the national media will treat Rahm's candidacy I might feel compelled to support/work for him out of loyalty to Obama.
That being said, I don't Rahm to run, but if he does (and its 99.9% likely he will) I will want him to win.

1. He can probably do a good job with the budget and improving the city's credit rating. |
|
He certainly has the skills set and talent to do the job. My grandmother loves him. He was a good representative and took care of his constituents.
I'd like to know about his positions on other local issues, such as the upcoming negotiations with the Chicago teachers union and mayoral control of the public school system.

2. I like Rahm, too, and I'll be voting for him |
|
Hoffman's out, and he was the only other candidate I would have voted for willingly.
Rahm's rap on DU is mostly constructed by know-nothings. He was my Congressperson and I'd be happy to see him take over for Daley.
Of course, as everyone in Chicago knows, Daley took the pass to give Rahm a soft landing out of the White House, where he's no longer considered effective. The things a done deal. Rahm will be mayor of Chicago, and that's pretty much well-settled. The rest of just a show for the outsiders.
