Replacing Rick Sanchez with Stephanie Miller... yea or nay?
CNN commentator got sacked today after making anti-jewish comments yesterday. How great would it be to have Stephanie Miller (or another liberal talk-show host) on their in his place??

Ooo, I'd LOVE to see Thom Hartmann on their too.

Opinions?

1. They interviewed Shuster, causing him to be all but canned
by MSNBC... Seems like now would be reasonable for them to hire HIM.

2. Gwen Ifell from PBS would be refreshing. And yes, Stephanie Miller would be terrific.

3. I would vote for Gwen!
She's amazingly intelligent, and she doesn't tell fart jokes. Probably a better fit at CNN:)

Too bad... that would definitely put CNN in the media spotlight.

6. I love Mike Malloy and his lovely wife too!
He has a nice little life going for him with his family and the family business. I'd hope he would chose that over a CNN gig, which would be quite strenuous and keep him from Molly. Something tells me that wouldn't be an option. I'm just guessing.

39. No way, not Gwen Ifill, she's a bland, conventional thinker, too tied into DC to be bold
Edited on Sat Oct-02-10 04:13 AM by CreekDog
From her I would expect a very bland program lacking insight with any nuance or original idea not already parroted by DC punditry. I base these opinions on the current show she moderates, getting some of the most bland, conventional reporters in DC from the most staid publications or news organizations. She's often had panels of only white men discussing the issues of poverty or lack of health care and did they make up for that by offering insightful reporting on issues they may not have intimate experience with? No, of course not.

The kind of programs she does and the way she's moderated debates, you can expect her show to effectively be an apologist for the most out of touch DC, the DC that has wonderful insight into the journo-politco world of adequate health care, private schools or fabulous well-funded public schools, great compensation, great access to public figures and so forth. Outside of that, well, you won't hear any special insight to what most people face...watch her show covering the health care bill sometime. Infuriating and offering no new information.

Yes, I expected better of her, I NEVER get it. Most DC pundits offered their own show would do no better by the way.

So she has a nice voice, is smart enough to sound intelligent and seems like a kind person --that's not good enough.

Yes, I'll tell you how I really feel. :hide:

And Stephanie Miller is the one that would be refreshing and she should do the show from LA if she can.

I think the bosses at CNN proved Sanchez's point when they fired him for being critical of Jewish people.

27. I think a simple apology would have been fine
When did we get so fucking intolerant? It's scary.

I think Sanchez was a complete idiot -- and his off the cuff statements pretty much proved that (as if his show didn't) -- but I don't think he deserved to be fired.

I kinda wonder if they were planning to dump him anyway, what with the new boss and all.

28. I personally think it's okay to insult anyone
Comedians do it all the time with impunity.

But I also think Sanchez's remarks were insensitive and stupid.

the interest to do a TV interview show on a daily basis. Very different from a writer's mentality.

21. Thank you
It's outrageous that they've skipped right over Don Lemon and TJ Holmes to give a slot to Eliot Spitzer.

Disgraced former politicians can get their own tv show, but solid black journalists already on the network just can't quite make the cut . . .

29. Maybe I have a reason why. Who the heck is Lemon? (or Holmes, for that matter)
Spitzer will draw audiences on his name alone. Of course, people will only continue watching if the show is good. Besides, it's not Spitzer's show. It's a co-hosted show. There's actually an educated woman over 35 co-hosting the show! (Unfortunately, she still has the blonde hair thing going.)

Maybe Lemon should get a blonde wig?

The all-white-all-night lineup is an absolute disgrace.

Miller's a lightweight. She spends too much time trying to make truly lame jokes rather than speaking about substance. That's her shtick. And I find it annoying.

41. Love me some Steph, but NO! I listen to Stephanie several times a week,
and she's great with most progressive callers, but it's usually Jim, Chris, or Hal Sparks who slay the Repuke callers. Stephanie's knowledge base is limited, but then she's a comedienne, afterall. If I were gonna suggest a female radio host for a show, it would have to be Randi Rhodes. Randi is second to none when it comes to debating complex issues. She has a tendency to be rude at times, but she's smart as hell, and always provides source material to back up her positions. Randi's problem is that she pisses off the left, at times, as much as she does the right.
