1. Friedman tends to veer into the histrionic in his |
|
columns.
It's as if everything has reached catastrophic levels and he is the Paul Revere to pronounce our doom.
One of these days there will be a contending third party in the U.S. because it's the nature of organized entities to undergo shifts in emphasis and sometimes, to eventually split into camps. Perot's effort was successful by U.S. third party standards, but unfortunately he was something of an ass and had very little to say. Something along the lines of Robert La Follette or Teddy Roosevelt's efforts seemed more persuasive. More commitment was required for the La Follette effort whereas Perot's supporters simply seemed vaguely dissatisfied.
The wild card in the deck might be Michael Bloomberg, who is said to have a few bucks saved up for a big project, and who frankly has nothing else to do. He could leave his post as NYC mayor at just about any time and buy a third-party political apparatus almost overnight in all the 50 states and territories, either with himself as the head ot a third party ticket or with himself as power broker for whoever would be. He's making some high-profile bipartisan endorsements in the last several months.
