Third Way tries to spin the Democratic Party to the right

Obama Strains to Get Liberals Back Into Fold

By PETER BAKER
Published: October 5, 2010

WASHINGTON — With four weeks until Congressional elections that will shape the remainder of his term, President Obama is increasingly focused on generating enthusiasm within the base that helped put him in the White House two years ago, from college students to African-Americans.

<...>

Third Way, an organization of centrist Democrats, produced a study showing that liberals are the smallest share of the electorate and not enough to keep Congress in Democratic hands. Citing Gallup polling data, the study said self-described conservatives made up 42 percent of the electorate, compared with moderates who make up 35 percent and liberals who make up 20 percent, a shift of several points to the right in the last two years.

In 16 of 21 hotly contested states, Democratic candidates who simply match Mr. Obama’s overall 2008 performance still will not have enough votes to win, according to the group’s study. Instead, the study said, the candidates must outperform Mr. Obama among moderates.

“Even if Democrats close the enthusiasm gap with their base, they still have another enthusiasm gap to close with moderates,” said Anne Kim, domestic policy program director for the group. “Democrats don’t have the luxury of leaning on their base to deliver wins because there simply aren’t enough liberals.”

Goal: spin the Democratic Party to the right. When talking about the base, this it's not about the overall electorate, which includes Republicans and Independents.

What Third Way fails to mention is that the Democratic Party has moved left, and liberals now outnumber conservatives in the party:

Third Way has a great idea, a tax receipt, except a closer look and it's disturbing (updated)

3. Well, I'm a liberal and I disagree. Pres. Obama is "in charge" of the executive branch...
... and "at the top of the party" as most self-described liberals will tell you, since 85% approve of his job performance according to the latest Gallup for the week ending October 3, 2010.

Bubba scored much lower than President Obama in job performance approval ratings at this same time in history among all Democrats (69% v. 81% respectively).

2. Not gonna work, and it seems to confirm my fears.
Namely Obama, and the DLC dems/DINO's are now going to be actively trying to form/create a new base to replace the liberal base instead of listening to them. NOT a good way to go when '12 is slapping you in the face.

5. What?
"going to be actively trying to form/create a new base to replace the liberal base"

First of all, the President has nothing to do with the DLC. Second, replace the base? Does that make sense?

Do you think Democrats can win without the largest segment of the Party?

Reality

4. Well, it's obvious Pres. Obama is not interested given the DLC is trying so hard to sway WH policy.

7. The corporate whores are in charge of what counts as "liberal" or "moderate"
If you look at issues, try asking people about the public option (60-80% in favor), MJ legalization, or whether corporations have too much power. And what do you call the 40% of Republican state legislators in PA who support single payer? The population on issues is far to the left of the political class.

10. People are not going to embrace the
title of liberal after the way it has been dragged through the mud and distorted by the right wing corporate media(Limbaugh/Fox). And liberal is a term fraught with confusion to begin with. There are social liberals, economic liberals and all sorts of other ways to use and confuse the term liberal. And the various enemies of the American people/worker do nothing but foster this confusion.

The enthusiasm gap exists mainly because millions of Obama supporters wanted a more progressive agenda enacted into law. Or. The enthusiasm gap exists because millions of Obama supporters wanted a more liberal agenda enacted into law. These voters are puzzled that they can't have what they want when the president they helped elect has a majority in both houses of congress. They remember that George W. Bush ran roughshod over Democrats in the House and Senate.

An honest poll would reveal that the American people support a more progressive legislative direction. Most Americans, for example, were in favor of a strong public option, or something they understood to approximate the single payer systems found in other nations.
