White House denies that Obama/Clinton is being considered
Reading this article it is clear that thus really is wistful thinking on the part of Woodward.

Here is the WH (Robert Gibbs)response:

"No one in the White House is discussing this as a possibility," Gibbs told CNN Wednesday morning.

CNN notes:

Obama advisers outside the White House note privately that it's significant that Woodward attributed the theory to Clinton advisers and not White House aides or Obama advisers, signaling this may only have traction among Clinton supporters hoping she would move one step closer to the Oval Office and be set up as the likely Democratic nominee for president in 2016.

Here's why I think it is Woodward's hope even more than Clinton's advisers hope.

Now you talk to Hillary Clinton or her advisers and they say 'no, no there's not a political consideration here,'" Woodward continued. "Of course the answer is -- you point out to them that her clout around the world when she goes to Europe, Asia, anywhere, is in part, not just because she's secretary of state or because she was married to President Clinton, (but) that people see a potential future president in her."

While Clinton is a competent SoS, I really do not see that she has lived up to the hype of being a superstar S0S, that the media saw as possible when she was named. I can't think of any foreign policy triumph, other than an Armenian/Turkish resolution where she really was credited with being important in keeping Armenia from getting cold feet. This idea - that she is more influential because she is seen as a future President - really does not seem to have any back up. (She IS seen as a SoS with extremely high name recognition and political support of her own.)

1. Exactly.
"While Clinton is a competent SoS, I really do not see that she has lived up to the hype of being a superstar S0S..."

It's interesting to watch the Hillary hawks push this. Aren't they satisfied with her position as Secretary of State? Not enough power?

Sounds like wishful thinking on the part of those who haven't gotten over the election.

7. you would think if you really wanted Hillary to be next,
you wouldn't make every effort you can to trash and bring down Obama.

But I guess that's my fault for thinking rationally.

18. From Aerosmith; "Dream On"
Yeah, sing with me, sing for the year
Sing for the laugh, sing for the tear
Sing with me, if it's just for today
Maybe tomorrow, the good Lord will take you away

Dream On Dream On Dream On
Dream until the dream come true
Dream On Dream On Dream On
Dream until your dream comes true
Dream On Dream On Dream On
Dream On Dream On
Dream On Dream On

10. I didn't know Bob Woodward
was such a loyal Hillary supporter. Is he the 'some people' to which you refer?

24. Bob Woodward...
has done NOTHING substantive since Nixon. Hell, he fawned over Bush. Methinks Bernstein did all the real work with Watergate.

6. Hillary's going to be almost 70 when 2016 rolls around.
She's not going to run again. It's just not happening.

And I'm glad Gibbs was very unequivocal in his denial.

11. "Clinton advisors" would never keep floating this w/o approval by the Clintons themselves.
It's pretty obvious that despite protestations to the contrary, Hillary and Bill are still yearning to be co-presidents again, Joe Biden be damned.

Biden better watch his back.

15. Hillary isn't out to get Joe. She would only do this as a favor to Barack.
She's not out to get anyone. She MIGHT reluctantly do it to serve her country.

There is nothing wrong with Joe, but the ticket might need some energy, we'll just have to see.

16. Has that ever happened before: jettisoning a VP for the 2nd term?
Edited on Wed Oct-06-10 06:01 PM by Qutzupalotl
It sounds unprecedented or at least hard to spin as a positive. It'd be like saying choosing the first VP was a mistake. So I don't see this going anywhere.

21. It sounds like someone decided to float a trial balloon in the media
Who knows who exactly. Woodward isn't a hack journalist, so somebody wanted this out there. I don't think it has to be an pro-Hillary conspiracy though. I think she is doing the best job she can as SoS. Some of the anti-Clinton digs at every opportunity make me roll my eyes.

22. One of Woodward's sources is Mark Penn. I think that counts as a "pro-Hillary conspiracy".
Edited on Sat Oct-09-10 07:07 PM by ClarkUSA
On page 26 of Obama Wars, Woodward writes that Mark Penn, a Hillary Clinton adviser and confidant, has always thought the Switcheroo could happen in 2012, even back before Clinton accepted Obama's Secretary of State offer:

Penn always had his eye on the prize — the White House...

Was Penn one of the "Hillary Clinton advisers" that Woodward was referring to yesterday? Probably! Because Woodward basically told Larry King the same thing a week ago that he told John King yesterday, but he framed it as something that had already been revealed in his book."
